Intel RST preventing Windows Update from running

Thread Starter
I recently replaced my partitioned 640GB WD Black with a SK Hynix SSD. I set BIOS to AHCI mode, and did a clean install of Windows 7. I believe I installed the AHCI drivers that were for my board, Gigabyte GA-45EP-UD3P (yeah, its old); Device Manager shows Intel ICH10R, using iaStor.sys driver.

Windows Update will not work. When I try and use it I get the error message 0xc8000247, which has lead to believe Intel Rapid Storage Technology is out of date. (I thought that RST was to combine an SSD with a HDD as one unit, which I do not have, nor feel the need to have)

Anyway, I try to update RST, but I get the message I need .net Framework install to update the driver. I cannot get .net Framework from Windows Update as it is not working. Trying an offline installer for .net Framework I get the error that RST is out of date.

Catch 22: I cannot update RST without .net Framework, and I cannot get .net Framework without RST.

Anyone have any clues? Can I just uninstall the Intel driver, will my computer use the Win7 built in driver? I do not like running on an un-updated machine.

IRST is a driver for the Intel AHCI controller. It's not exclusively for RAID. You can use the generic Microsoft AHCI driver and it'll work fine but you won't get the best possible performance. It's kind of like using the generic display adapter driver vs. the NVIDIA driver. So, it'll work. That's the driver that was being used before you installed IRST.

Which version did you install? With the EP45-UD3P, you will likely be unable to install newer versions.

I can tell you though from personal experience that there's really nothing wrong with not updating anything. I haven't used Windows Update since July of 2012 because I got sick of it and my computer has been fine. I don't miss Windows Update one bit. For me, Windows Update was like a gnat at a barbecue just bugging the crap out of me and now it's gone and I don't miss it.

My driver for AHCI (ICH10R) is version 8.9, from 2009. The current driver listed on Intel's site is 15.8. Maybe I need to use older drivers that do not require the .net Framework and work my way forward?

Have you not updated Windows since 2012? What about security updates and the like?

Don't worry about my computer. I'm not worried. I don't miss Windows Update.

With IRST, you have to stay with the version that was current for your chipset. This is counter-intuitive for anyone who is accustomed to always having the latest of everything. You will not be able to use anything newer than the 10.x series. When I had the EP45-UD3P, the best IRST version I found was either 10.0.0.1046, or 10.1.0.1008. Unfortunately, I don't know where you can download these anymore, but I still have them. I can try to find a way to get 10.1.0.1008 to you somehow. I have DropBox, but I worry that they will take it down right away because it's Intel's. heh We would have to be quick.
