Is G-Sync really necessary with a 4K monitor ?

Hi everyone ,
We have seen Asus announcment about new first 4k gaming monitor 144hz with
G-Sync + HDR + ips . i think Asus PG27UQ will cost almost 1500$ and i can't afford it .

So i can't decide between 1) Acer XB321HK 4k G-Sync + ips
or upcoming Lg 32ud99 4k HDR + ips without G-Sync .
What is the most important thing between (G-Sync and HDR ) ?
Can i play with lg 32ud99 with upcoming nvidia gpus sush as volta with smooth gameplay
at 4k without having to G-Sync
or G-Sync is worth it with 4k ips 60hz than HDR ?

thanks in advance

It depends on how sensitive you are to screen tearing. It bothers me a great deal, so gsync or freesync are a godsend in my experience. HDR is very new in monitors and may or may not be a while before games support it. I think mass effect andromeda is supposed to have HDR support.

I'v been playing Resident Evil 7 in HDR on my 4K TV (Samsung KS8000). It has no G-Sync, but the HDR vs. normal color is absolutely massive. I won't even bother to play this game on a regular monitor because of how much better HDR looks.

It's not even possible to give a proper comparison without seeing it in person, but here's some pics for what it's worth. There is no black areas when viewing this in person. It's just not possible for me to photograph all the colors without a several thousand dollar camera.

If I had to chose between HDR gaming and G-sync, I would pick HDR. G-sync / Freesync don't do anything once you hit the maximum refresh rate of the screen. Personally, I will be saving money for that new Asus monitor that you mentioned because it literally has no compromises.

Thnks bro
I think upcoming nvidia gpus in the near future will be hit 4k above 60fps so in my opinion G-sync is a temporary solution for current gpus .
I think upcoming generations from nvidia will be overkill to 4k 60hz so maybe don't notice G-sync above 60 fps .
So i think , i'll be happy with upcoming Lg 32ud99 HDR gaming monitor with freesync when i'll use upcoming gpus from nvidia by 2018 or 2019 and i don't need to save money for that new Asus monitor Asus PG27UQ .

That looks terrible. I'll take no hdr all day if all it does is crush entire color spectrum's and make everything look over saturated. It honestly reminds me of those shoddy plugins like SweetFX.

Like I already said, it's not possible for me to show you a proper comparison using my camera or your 8-bit monitor.

There is nothing over saturated about it at all. In person you don't see that orange glow on the tape recorder and the light coming from it is actually darker than the normal version. You can also see all the dark areas and all the details perfectly fine. Once you compare them side by side in person, you would see that.

The things to see in my photos would be the superior color shading on the coffee mug and beer bottle area that didn't get ruined by my camera. Another thing is the table looks like a plain tan color on the normal picture. The developers (who use >10-bit monitors) intended for it to be a deep red color with allot of dirt / grime and wear patterns that wore through the table's finish in several places. But you would never see those details on a lesser quality display because you can only see 17 million colors on 8-bit, but 10-bit color is over 1 billion colors.

I dunno man I play it on a KS8000 as well and with HDR on vs off it's a trade off. There is quite an improvement in color detail for stuff visible but it really makes the game too dark for me to enjoy. I know that's how they intended it to be but it's a mixed experience IMO.

Also you've gotta keep in mind there are 3 PC games with HDR support and it's implementation in the PC space is in it's infancy where as Gsync will benefit you in any game past or present. I personally don't think it's worth buying this first wave of HDR monitors. We need more games for it to matter and also we'll see pretty big leaps in the quality of implementation pretty fast.

Well, that's what the overhyped HDR does tongue.gif

It's like going to a market and looking at various TVs. ALL of them are set to oversaturated colors and have absurd contrast setting. Guess that's what sells: eye-burning whites and oversaturated colors that look like after taking shrooms.

The color-accurate TV in the lot would look dull and pale. But that's how it's supposed to look. No tripping colors, damnit.

go for g-sync over 4k. 1440p looks good to and is way cheaper in combination with sync and so on

1440p & G-Sync and if you want "HDR" just turn up saturation in Settings and you're set smile.gif
