Still a newbie. Did I break it? Athlon II x4 640 with N68S3+

The rig.
http://www.overclock.net/lists/display/view/id/6664328

I just don't know what to do with this stubborn old sow.

My usual stablility:

220 FSB/BUS = 3.3ghz from 3.0
Idle is 38-45C

The max I've gone is 240 running for a fewdays.

I also try to overclock my ram and so far my fastest is 1333 with 8-8-7-24(Unclocked).

I can run my usual stability with prime95 on for days.
But after failing to boot and having to restart CMOS so many times, I can now barely set my BUS at 210 without failing. It's now even more difficult to OC.

Did I mess it up for good? Does the CMOS battery need to recharge? Do I need to master the art of voltages? For 220 FSB I usually do not need to boost the cpu volt,(it can only go up by 0.5% anyways.)

My initial guess is an issue with your motherboard, more specifically your VRM's.

At 100% utilization, you're probably pulling 120W through your three phase motherboard. That's a lot of watts for only a couple MOSFETs, and especially ones without any cooling on them.

The only solution you can try is with a few cheap sticky heat sinks, but if the VRM's are damaged there's no "un-damaging" them.

Hell, for $30 more you can get a whole new motherboard.

Found out my problem. Had APM Advanced Power Management enabled in the bios. Wouldn't let me go over 220 FSB.

id cease overclocking on that system asap. that board is grossly under spec for overclocking. your lucky you havent blown it up.

This will overclock fine, you may hit your headroom higher than other boards but there is no reason that his board will "blow up."

His PC would just shut off before anything that drastic happens. Thermals would probably reach too high before he runs into any voltage problems anyways assuming hes not on a custom water block cooler.

I have to disagree with some of this at least and here's why.

I have one that's simillar, namely an ASRock N68C-GS FX and it's not a good board for OC'ing, that board is the same basic thing and if you lean on it much it won't hold up for long. Has a basic VRM phase count and in truth it's a basic, no frills budget board. The N68 chipsets were used on such boards as they were a cheap alternative to the more expensive ones.

Although you won't see it go "Boom" you can and probrably will experience the "Pop" of a VRM/MOSFET when it goes along with the light show it's probrably gonna make and will probrably take the chip with it too once it goes.
These boards are good for the smaller chips such as a Sempron, Regor or maybe (And I emphasize maybe) a Rana/Heka core. A quad is really stressing it, unlocking something like a Rana or Callisto will most likely be a quick end to it.
Mine claims it's able to run FX chips and it probrably will..... However it doesn't say for how long. In short, anything that's rated above 95W should be avoided like the plague for it and even then I'd have to wonder.

The OP's quad isn't above this threshold but kinda pushing it.
If wanting to OC it then seriously, get a stronger board that can handle the additional wattage draw it has in an OC'ed state, clock it up and enjoy.

Alright how about I just keep it at stock FSB, and just lower my ram timings and increase voltages?

I find overclocking just my GPU is giving me significant performance gains.

Alright I'll just post here instead of making a new thread.

Using this thread I discovered I have high DPC latency and recognized I have some kind of freezing while playing videos or playing games.
http://www.overclock.net/t/1433882/gaming-and-mouse-response-bios-optimization-guide-for-modern-pc-hardware

I messed around with Win10 too much and system restore can't bring it back to normal settings. It was already messed up anyways as my DPC Latency is in the 1000s. I'm just going to install Win 7, but should I use IDE or AHCI?

Any tips for clean installation? I'm going to use Chew WGA.

And how do I lower my BLCK? Do I lower my multiplier and increase FSB? Would that help me get 1:1 ratio?
