Hi. I will delid my i7 7700k today.

Unfortunately, I won't be using any of those 3d printed tools out there. I know it'd be the perfect scenario. Just not possible today.

So:

- razor method (I got cutters here. A knife cutter that is)

- vice grip method (I've got a vice and some wood)

Any tips I should be aware of. Is one method safer than the other?

If you can't afford the Rockit88, use a double-sided razor blade and a lot of care. The vise/hammer hasn't been a good choice since Skylake because of Intel's much thinner pcb's.

Ok guys. So I went ahead and delidded using a razor blade I purchased at a local store. It had already some protection for my fingers on the side that doesn't have the blade.

Cost me like 4$. Otherwise I was considering a box cutter but I wouldn't recommend it. Too many things can go wrong.

I got lucky I guess, not a single problem and it literally took me 2 min to delid.

Thanks to this guys youtube video

My main advice to you or people attempting this would be:

Make sure to orient the blade towards the ihs and not the pcb. That way if you slip, you slip upwards. I tried with gloved first, ain't no way you could do it that way. Do it bare hands, you have more control that way.

As for the method in the video, the guy goes pretty fast, but he's right on the money.

3 things to do: as soon as you feel the blade slipping, stop all movement.

And I couldn't stress how important this next thing is. Notice how the guy brings the CPU close to the edge of the table allowing you to slide down on the sides all the way to the wood of the desk instead of losing that precious angle.

Scratches on the pcb can kill the CPU. So your focus is just to imitate that guy just about.

I took a gamble and imitated him and it went absolutely superb
