Call of Duty 2017 Going "Back to Its Roots"

According to Activision's Bobby Kotick and Thomas Tippl, the 2017 release of Call of Duty will bring the series "back to its roots" in terms of combat.

"In 2017, Activision will take Call of Duty back to its roots and traditional combat will once again take center stage," Tippl said.

"This is what our dedicated community of Call of Duty players and Sledgehammer Games, which has been developing this year's title, are the most excited about."

Activision feels as though the lackluster sales (at least compared to older games in the franchise) of Infinite Warfare were due to the drastic change in setting.

"It's clear that, for a portion of our audience, the space setting just didn't resonate," Tippl stated.

"We have a passionate, experienced studio deeply committed to this direction, and despite the risks we saw, we believe it is important to consider the passions of our game teams in deciding what content to create."

It's a bit odd to say that though, because these games are usually on three year development cycles spread out between Sledgehammer Games, who is working on this year's game, Infinity Ward, who made Infinite Warfare, and Treyarch. Given that, it means that the decision to shift back to the franchise's "roots" probably didn't come largely due to the lackluster sales of Infinite Warfare, a game released less than a year ago. Instead, it could have been a move that has been planned for quite some time. The stellar reception for Battlefield 1's WWI setting may have also played a major role in this shift in direction. This is, of course, merely speculation on our part.

I'm all for them going back to their roots, wouldn't mind another WWII or Modern Warfare game. I kind of got the sense that they knew this game wasn't gonna do well when they tried to milk the hell out of COD4 Remastered as a way to hedge losses.

IW is a completely different game than any previous COD. As ridiculous as BO3 was, it was still fun, and still felt like COD. Infinite Warfare changed everything from the kinds of guns to the maps and even character appearances.

Good storyline and characters in Call of Duty? What planet do you come from? Please don't insult Earth, education, literature, and video gaming so harshly! Call of Duty (from Modern Warfare 2 and onward) is about as poor as it gets in both regards, in the video game industry at least.

Modern Warfare series were pretty good Cpt Price, Soap, Roach Gaz, Nikolai and villians remind me of nice moments that I got from those games. I liked Cod WaW and Black Ops too Reznov and villains weren't bad.

Can you tell me what were you expecting from completely based on war and some international diplomatic game ?

Immortal Captain Price, whose service dates back to WWII.

Modern Warfare 2's plot = Russia takes out a satellite and that's enough for them to capture the White House! And let's not forget the hilarious JFK fiasco in Black Ops.

Typical mainstream Hollywood inspired garbage. There is no substance present that indicates good storytelling or character development even by video game standards. They are not even designed to be strong in those aspects, they're just meant to be entertaining shooters (and multiplayer games first and foremost) but I find they fail on these terms as well.

Honestly the only shooter with decent writing in general (as in, not just by video game standards) is Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason but this game isn't even sold anywhere.

Not the same Cpt. Price that you saw on the Cod 1-2. That one in the Modern Warfare he is just same as his grandfather and his name is John Price.

I agree with you, stories that we saw on that series weren't so good it is just a mainstream Hollywood and propoganda of U.S but nevertheless most of moments and story-line made me excited.

And the roots of CoD are much different, although not conceptually better. CoD was originally a partially, loosely authentic video game representation of WWII and even sought to deliver insight and perspective with the brief history lessons and more accurate introduction to technology from the era. Whereas Black Ops has copious amounts of modern red dot sights and guns (and perhaps other tech, don't remember to well) that don't belong.
