If you are running a GTX 1070 and you want some more PPD try the following:
Overclock the RAM on the GTX 1070. This can net a 50k increase sometimes less.
Add the following flags to the folding client for your GTX 1070:
Name - client-type
Value - beta
Name - max-packet-size
Value - big
Name - next-unit-percentage
Value - 100
This could net a significant increase in PPD. From what I have seen it has done as much as 50-100k depending on the work unit. Maybe more maybe less depending on what WU you get.
Please take this all with a grain of salt. I am currently testing these to find out for sure but others have had success... supposedly.
Probably. Give it a try and see. You should take this with a grain of salt but it is something that I have seen with other people experiencing similar issues. Just aggriatiing everything in place.
I believe i'm having issues with drivers. I'm using Windows 10, and have my MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X OC'd to 2025 Mhz Core Clock and Memory Clock to 4399 MHz. My current PPD always fluctuates, and I did have that same usage problem you have. My fix was opening up the folding viewer, and that will make it use your gpu boost. I'm assuming that drivers are still a little weird on that one. Currently i'm only getting 578k estimated PPD reported on the client. I have seen my PPD go up to 680k, that was with a different driver (I think I need to find it x.x) O.C'd to 1932 Mhz I believe, and without using the flags. I suppose I just need to do a lot more testing. Anyways, I was curious what drivers you've tested and have had luck on.
I think client-type advanced is better than beta. From what I understand they are post beta but pre-release. With beta you have the situation where wu's might fail or return 0 points.
The beta WU's are untested and supposed to used by the Stanford Beta Testing Team and they give feedback. If you are not a member and ask a question over there your post will be deleted. After a beta WU gets a base point and QRB assigned it's moved to advanced and for the general public but you are still testing to see if they need to adjust points or the change WU. Even if you don't use a flag like me you will still get duds or heaters that your card can't complete.

Using the viewer takes GPU power. Your problem is probably your driver or you could have your Folding client set to low or are pausing to game. I watch YouTube and post here with my daily rig and it drops my PPD.

I don't have a baseline to compare it to, I have tried different drivers though. I'm probably going to test out the latest driver and i'll see how that goes. I've tried 372.70, 373.06, 376.48. I really need to keep notes on each one though
Considering I can't tell you the exact results of each, just that I never solved the gpu boost problem, I suppose I should at least see how each affects PPD.
Update on last post: Tried out the lastest driver 378.66. It was using my GPU boost, but was clocking 550k ppd
I left it running and went to work. Checked it just now after getting back, and it had went to 630k PPD, but GPU boost wasn't running anymore, so it downclocked it down to 1532 MHz (I believe.) Anyways, I opened up the viewer again, and it jumped up to 650k. I'll test this one out a little bit more before I try a different driver.
I thought it was client-type fatfanny. nav you are a silly guy.

I thought compute only brings GPU to p2 power state when boost is enabled in BIOS
If you wanna be pedantic. DWM uses GPU. So run a black desktop with minimal things in your sys tray and taskbar and no desktop icons... But just irfanview open with a gif looping so you can see from afar if you froze up
