AMD Ryzen 1600X $260 New Benchmarks, Matches Intel's $430 i7 6800K
Quote:
The AMD Ryzen leaks and benchmarks just keep on coming! The latest one is for the 6 core 12 thread 1600X. This is a 95W Black Edition processor with a base clock speed of 3.3GHz and a Turbo clock speed of 3.7GHz and is due to launch on March 2nd at $259.

Impressively, the 1600X which carries a similar price-tag to the unlocked Kaby Lake Core i5 7600K manages to punch two hundred dollars above its weight and slightly outperofrm the much more expensive $430 i7 6800K. This is despite running at 100MHz below the Intel Broadwell-E six core. This suggests that the Zen microarchitecture may be a much more formidable IPC contender than we previously thought, outperforming Broadwell core for core and clock for clock, at a lower wattage. Very impressive indeed.

Looking forward to seeing more information about these "lower cost" skews. Things are getting exciting

All depends on how well these things overclock. I am really interested in XFR and how that works, just slap beefiest cooler and there and let it do its thing right?

We're starting to get a clearer picture of just how fast AMD's Ryzen processors will be thanks to a select few benchmarks leaks, and they're painting a rather worrying picture for Intel. The latest data points to AMD's Ryzen 5 1600X outperforming Intel's Core i7-6850K in both single-threaded and multi-threaded tests in the CPU-Z benchmark tool.

Why is this significant? Because the Ryzen 5 1600X is slated to retail at just $259, while Intel's Core i7-6850K retails for a whopping $610. The two CPUs also offer similar specifications, with similar frequencies, 6 cores and 12 threads each, with the AMD processor having a maximum turbo frequency of 3.7GHz and the Intel chip of 3.8GHz.

Impressively, not only does the Ryzen 5 1600X beat the slightly higher-clocked Intel CPU, but it has a much lower TDP/power consumption of 95W compared to a TDP of 140W for the Intel Core i7-6850K, which should mean it runs cooler.

I've included data for Intel's Core i7-7700K in the graph too - it has a much higher turbo frequency of 4.5GHz, which is why it obtained a faster single-thread score. It's worth remembering that not all programs will make use of the extended number of cores and threads offered by both Intel and AMD's 6, 8 and 10-core CPUs - raw frequency and IPC are still just as important, so a lot will depend on just how overclockable Ryzen parts are when they arrive.

That said, even the lowly Core i7-7700K costs $100 more than the supposed retail price of the Ryzen 5 1600X, which is a huge amount at this end of the market. Even if the AMD CPU can be pushed to around just 4.5GHz, it would still make for a vastly better offering and as the graphs above show, in anything remotely multi-threaded it will likely be significantly faster, even if clocked slower too.

AMD Ryzen XFR Frequencies Revealed
Quote:
AMD's upcoming Ryzen processors are "unlocked," in that they feature unlocked base-clock multipliers that let you easily overclock them; yet a few of its variants feature a brand extension "X." As our older article details, the "X" refers to availability of the XFR (extended frequency range) feature. Think of it as a second stage boost that rewards good CPU cooling with higher CPU clocks set automatically. The Ryzen R7-1800X, R7-1700X, R5-1600X, R5-1400X, and R3-1200X feature this.

The R7-1800X features clock speeds of 3.60 GHz, with TurboCore frequencies of 4.00 GHz and XFR ranging beyond 4.00 GHz. That of the R7-1700X is set beyond 3.80 GHz, and the R7-1600X beyond 3.70 GHz, R5-1400X beyond 3.90 GHz, and the R3-1200X beyond 3.80 GHz. There are no fixed values as to how much higher these frequencies will go, probably because AMD doesn't want to advertise clock speed figures consumers hold it to account for. The TurboCore frequencies, on the other hand, are achievable on even the included stock cooling solutions, or coolers that meet the TDP ratings of these chips.

Thats the only explanation I can find right now on the XFR Frequencies. Will dig around some more at home this evening if possible as I am doing this all at work right now.

So we could see the 1600X with a 3.8Ghz core clock?. Perhaps binned models will hit 4.0?

#11 ·
Im confused tho, we should still be able to overclock past 4.0ghz disregarding xfr right? Or is that about as high as these are gonna go?

#12 ·
The multipliers are unlocked, but this is the best thing I have seen on how far they can clock. It is looking like not much past stock.

That's coming from the lead test guy from computerbase.de

Also from the same guy

Looks like the OC potential on Air / Water is basically non-existent past stock.

Hmmm. limited overclock ability.......

Hmm. 6c/12t at 4.0Ghz or more? Sounds like a winner to me.

If you only need one ethernet port, consider the taichi for $40 less. They look the same as far as I can see.

I'd recommend you look at an RX 480 instead. PCPartPicker has a few of them listed for $165 after a $20 mail in rebate. It looks like the ratings on UserBenchmark.com are more favorable towards the RX 480.

I'll admit I haven't read very much on overclocking these, but what's the point of an unlocked multiplier if they won't go much past stock frequencies?

WoW and overwatch benchmarks seem to highly favor nvidia, but you are absolutely right that the 480 is the better value for most people. Ill ask around my guild see if anyone is having issues with a 480 and WoW.

Ah I see why you were favoring the 1060-3GB. There are a couple options for that GPU that I found that were around $185, so you may want to look into those, if it turns out there are issues with the 480.
