"The record run shows a group of overclockers putting an AMD Ryzen 7 1800X chip through the test in Cinebench R15. The chip was cooled with LN2 and voltage was bumped to an outrageous 1.875V. This allowed the overclockers to push this chip to 5.2 GHz across all 8 cores using LN2 cooling which kept the chip operating at a cool -200c. This is absolutely amazing for a chip that is yet to be released for consumers."

This whole thing hinges on overclocking capability. Dying for the results.
Because these are the people who get them first to stir buzz.

You can also factor in a TON of sand-bagging here as well. 5.2 is nowhere near the upper limits if I had to bet.

The good news for the 1800x OC is that the world record for the 6900K is around 5.2Ghz as well: http://hwbot.org/submission/3352024_paralyzer2005_cpu_frequency_core_i7_6900k_5220_mhz

So...expect the 1700x/1800x at 4.2-4.4 on top tier air coolers with good case airflow should be achievable.
Nobody even bothers Ln2'ing 6900k's for r15 and other benches really, 5960x is miles faster on Ln2.

Yet to be released but extreme OCers get it for free prelaunch, cherry picked and what not. Coz why not right. Marketing. Seems darn low 5.2Ghz at -200C. I do not expect it to clock better than BW-E, so far it seems underwhelming OC wise from all the leaks.

There were rumors of non X chips being a slightly older stepping, at least at launch. Wait for reviews guys.

5.2 seems really low for LN2.

The price tiering on the 7 series gave hints of difficulty in OCing.

Should I get 1700 or 1700x if I wanna go the cheap route?
Wait until the process gets better and there are plenty spare fast chips, then I would get a 1700 as long as the TDP is same as on Intel CPUs as in not enforced or changeable in UEFI. Intel has at least on Z97 by default 4000W and 1000A for the power and current protections, meaning the 88W CPUs can run as fast as they want and burn to crisp if you're not careful and the mobo has enough power and current to push. As such the TDP specified by Intel is a guideline for cooling and mobo compatibility. Dunno how AMD has done it lately, the older AMDs I've had never had any power or current protections, certainly not configurable.

I'm pretty sure even at a modest 4.2ghz this will still be a beast.

5.2GHZ on LN2?

So it's not a super overclocker then I assume.

I'd expect 6GHz+ on LN2... then again the i7-5820K supposedly averages 5.5GHz on LN2

I wouldn't expect crazy clocks. Granted this is a stepping 1 chip. So its easy to assume newer chips will clock better (maybe not by a large margin, but better) The fact that it is an 8 core with denser packaging than intel will in itself make it harder to keep the cores cool. If it can get near 4.5 it will be with most 5960x in terms of clocks. Should be a very impressive chip.

Physics at that scale in nm is what will keep clocks highly constrained on any 8-core chip. Intel knows this as well as AMD. The gem here will not be getting higher clocks on Water or Air.

It's already stated, although many think we'll uncover some other gem but imo it's in plain sight right now... THE PRICE. Period.

What will be the only gem to be seen in all of this is will not be from AMD but from Intel eventually...maybe lol.

Do they:

1) Up the core count on their $1200 chip to 10 and drop the 5960X down to $500? Crazytown, and Intel is too stodgy to move fast imo.

2) Bring in a new line top to bottom with similar core counts that handily beats AMD's Zen at the same price points? I think eventually, but will there be anyone left who hasn't already purchased a Zen cpu by then.

3) Concede this round to AMD and not adjust their prices at all and do media campaigns about Intel Efficiency & masterful engineering and 4K streaming etc...

Maybe it is if you hit it with a hammer while being at -200C.

For me the choice would be either 1700 or one of the hexa cores and push it to 4GHz while being a low $ purchase than the crazy 1800X at $499.
