MSI R9 270X still just on 1030 Mhz , never 1080Mhz or 1120... Where is the problem ?

Thread Starter
Hello Guys,

I am looking for advice regarding Core Clock adjustment.

I got intel i5-4670k + 8GB RAM + MSI Gaming R9 270X

My problem is GPU is always (if not idle ) on 1030 Mhz. And officialy it should go at full load when tempreture is okay at least on 1080 Mhz boost in gaming mode. In stock OC mode even to the 1120 Mhz.

I am playing Disnohored 2 on Full HD and High details. When I turn of vsync and set fls limit to 75, i get something arround 45 fps and in afterburner i can see gpu is going on full load but Clock ist still ,,just'' 1030 Mhz. No boost and in afterburner or Crimson I can see max Core Clock is 1080Mhz. I even try to tweak max to 1120Mhz or even 1180Mhz, and pull also power level to +5% or +10 % but GPU behave still same, 1030 Mhz. Temprature I assume is okay, in basic profile FAN are at 21 percent during gaming on full load and tempreture is about 70 C. When I active vsync for 59Hz, FPS keeps 30 , GPU load drop to the 75 percent and temp is arround 60-65 C.

I am not using msi gaming up, as i mentoined i tried msi afterburner to tweak and also crison default settings but with no reaction.
I would like to try if i can get stable 60 fps in OC mode and for what temp and noise. 30 fps for Disnohored is pretty okay but 60 is better biggrin.gif

Andy advices ?

ps: after start of pc i get fatal error for riva tuner, but i am not using , dont know if msi afterburner needs or crison...
ps2: I se somewhere advice to uninstall raptr, i will do so today.

"...in basic profile FAN are at 21 percent during gaming on full load..." <- there is your problem.

Get rid of Rivatuner and get MSI Afterburner and create a fan curve so as the card heats up on load the fan will spin up not stay idle at 21 percent and throttle the card.

If the card is only getting to 70C I don't think thermal throttling is the issue. Did you ever get this figured out?

I have an XFX R9-270X 2GB that I OC and it gets to about 90C on occasion. I discovered that the fans running at 100% didn't offer much more cooling than when they were run at 75%. Maybe 3C difference at the most. I figured that running at 87C or 90C wasn't going to matter really and just run a custom curve in MSI Afterburner. Your fans will work differently since it's a different brand.

Upload your bios .rom here in .zip format. It's a Pitcairn GPU, and I just finished a 280X mod. Found the performance is in the fan profile. From max 60fps to max 86fps.

Let me know thumb.gif

Interesting. The Curacao in the 270X is supposedly very similar to Pitcairn. I wonder if an update or modded BIOS would have the same effect. I've got two, I'm willing to brick one for the sake of science!

If you put 1173mhz in the Boot part of VBE... It will work at 1173Mhz

The HAWK Bios is the latest.... First uninstall display driver in device manager with software... then DDU without restart... then without restarting again install the latest driver...

If you have unified overclocking checked in MSI Afterburner uncheck and reset and turn off all the monitoring.. Close the App... Use Sapphire Trixx instead...

Here's a bios I made using the latest MSI Hawk 270X BIOS .. with 1173mhz core which I found to be the fastest stable... and a fan tune I found to yield near the fastest on the record charts of fps...

Ill get u bios if u want?
