HTPC specs:
Proc: i3
RAM: 8gb
Mobo: Zotac H67-itx

If the HTPC is connected directly to the TV is a video card still needed?

In my setup, the HTPC is only used to play content on the TV it's connected to.

Depends on what you are going to play. VLC will probably run fine on the integrated GPU of the i3.

Things like madVR with the upscaling and post-processing methods will require a discrete GPU.

I agree with GoLDii3 on the iGPU should be enough. What resolution are you pushing and what media will you be using?

It's not required, but a dedicated video card will obviously be the better choice in 90% of scenarios.

I just use Intel graphics on an i3 and everything works fine - TV, Amazon & Netflix streaming, Blu-Ray DVDs all play without issues on a 32 inch Sony.(don't need any thing bigger).
