What's in a name?

Ever since we got news Jim Keller was working on Zen I've been foaming at the mouth for it. This build was originally going to be called the Hype Train in honor of how excited the entire community has become over Zen. My goal was and is to achieve the highest clocks on an 1800x with 24/7 operation (without the hassle of phase changers or condensation). The original design for the HypeTrain came about a month ago when I first started looking into chilled liquid loops. I had designed a dual loop system to separate the coolant from the chiller. I was going to use a Koolance HXP 193, a heat plate exchanger, to pass heat between liquids without mixing them. This way when I wanted to just run the loop off of external rads and not use the chiller I could without any issues. The initial HypeTrain loop looked like this:

Fast forward to about 2 weeks ago and the HypeTrain had evolved into the HypeJet. The reasons for this were many. First and functionally I had decided against a dual loop. Instead I'd be abandoning the external rads and run solely off the liquid chiller all the time (Hailea HC500). To make this a more practical solution I added a 26 liter reservoir in the form of an Igloo Iceless cooler (built in peltier). This would allow for the chiller to build up a lot of thermal capacity in the reservoir before the stress of the PC started to put load on the chiller.

The next part and the reason for the change from HypeTrain to HypeJet was that inside the case I'll be building a ducted cooling system. HypeJet will feature a single 280mm radiator inside the case which will be used to dump cold air directly on the motherboard instead of blowing all over the case. This duct will be 3D printed and fit directly over the radiator forming a tunnel that narrows and directly exhausts across the side of the motherboard.

Lastly the HypeJet will feature a wing type design to cover the duct work and give a fighter jet / Gundam appearance inside the case. This wing design will also allow for the hiding of hoses and cables to give the build a clean look. The final part of the name "Spartan" comes from the builds color theme which will be Michigan State University themed (green and white). The SSC coming from the EVGA "Superclocked" abbreviation.

Part Selection

Hardware:
  • Ryzen R7 1800X
  • Asus Crosshair VI Hero
  • EVGA 1200 P2
  • Nvidia Titan XP
  • Trident Z RGB 32 GB (4x8) @ 3866 (likely to run at 3200@14)
  • Samsung 960 Pro (512GB)
  • Mushkin Reactor (1TB)

Cooling
  • CPU Block- Heatkiller IV Copper/ NI
  • GPU Block- Heatkiller IV Copper/ NI
  • Radiator- Black Ice Nemesis GTS 280
  • Chiller- Hailea HC 500
  • Pump- EK Dual Revo D5 PWM Serial
  • Pump Res- Bitspower 100 tube
  • Sys Res- Igloo Iceless Cooler 26 liter
  • Fittings- Bitspower sterling silver
  • Hose- Koolance LRT crystal clear
  • Dye- Mayhem clear green
  • Hose sleeving- White but still figuring it out (the idea here is to allow for the green and clear of the tube to peep through the white hosing while the rest of the build is black and metal, although I will be painting the IO cover and potentially the heatsinks white with chrome trim as well)

What's next?

Waiting for a few more fittings and adapters to finish the concept testing. Once every component has been proven out I'll start putting everything together for the final / complete build

Reservoir testing results:

So today I got the thermoelectric cooler which I'll be using as a reservoir and decided to test it out. I filled it up all the way with tap water, plugged it in and then came back to check on it every once in a while, here are the results:

Starting water temp = 13c (air ambient in room is 22c)
After 45 minutes = 11.5c
After 2 hours= 10c
After 6 hours= 8c
After 24 hours = 5-6c (ice has formed on the peltier)

To conclude I'm very impressed with the performance of this cooler. While it certainly wouldn't be able to maintain these temps as soon as heat starts being pumped into the system, it does validate the idea of using it as a chilled reservoir. This will save a lot of time waiting for the aquarium chiller (Hailea HC500) to bring down temps. I will be testing overnight to see what 12 or 24 hours can do to the water temp but I think 8c is likely a best case and considering dew point in the room will be at around freezing (relative humidity in room = 15-20%), there won't be any condensation worries even if it does get below 5c.

It was a really long week...

Was going to spend this week completing the loop so when Ryzen dropped I'd be able to have everything together this weekend. Unfortunately I got food poisoning last Sunday and didn't recover until Thursday, just in time to make it to Microcenter to get my chip and board. Since then I've thrown the Ryzen setup into the case with corsair H60 just to validate all the components and get some initial benches and temps for a sort of baseline. Max clock is 4.1 at the moment with temps hitting high 70s under load at around 1.55 volts peak. A lot of weird stuff going on when OC'ing Ryzen and stability with a hi mem clock and timings is very difficult to nail down. Hopefully sub-ambient cooling will be able to get me somewhere special (4.3-4.4?) but right now it's looking much bleaker than I originally hoped for.

I was however able to install a vertical gpu bracket to get that part taken care of and I'm very happy with the way it turned out. After this I'll be completing the chilled loop component parts and then we should be underway on the chilly chilly temps. All other parts are in so only delays will be heading to the office now.
