Why is SLI "Dead" - Page 24

If it were dead, why would they bother supporting it? With the push for higher res displays, SLI/Xfire will always be there and for the most part will be supported. We dont have a single gpu yet that can maintain 60fps with max settings, dual cards are far from dead.

Dual cards are actually pretty much dead, the last real dual gpu card was what, the titan Z? Of course SLI/crossfire isn't 100% dead, it's just fledgling, support has just gotten worse and worse, back in my 560ti days, sli was great, same with 680,my 7970s were okay, with the 780 the support was getting worse, 980s worse still, 980tis the support was probably the worst it's ever been, this is the first time I haven't had 2 gpus in my system in 6+ years, and I surprisingly don't miss it at all, now whenever they release that 4k 144hz monster, I may have to rethink my position...

Sorry Ill make sure to specify between SLI and dual next time. 1080Ti SLI has been nothing short of excellent for 4k 60fps. The only issues I had recently was with DoWIII beta but Nvidia released an SLI profile for the release. Every game I play now supports SLI, and the experience has been fantastic. One gpu doesn't cut it at 4k unless you sacrifice some eye candy. With GeoW4 recently implementing SLI I think the future is pretty good.

DX12 gives devs the choice to enable SLI/CF
Developers today are console focused, developing for a single GPU first.

If it makes financial sense, they'll patch in SLI/CF support that will perform ok.

But with tight deadlines to deliver games, devs just don't have the incentive to enable multi-gpu.
If the game runs at 60fps with the top GPU at the recommended resolution, that's all they care about.

Multi-gpu is dead because developers were given a choice.
Gone are the days Nvidia and AMD could twist arms and fill pockets to get features like this working.

I disagree. If that was the case, why would we have some devs supporting SLI in dx12 only games?

Because it is part of some games' marketing strategy to be unique by supporting DX12 SLI, instead of say, being unique in gameplay or graphics or even in offering PC-optimized performance.

Alright if that's the case then it's not dead. Tomb Raider and Gears both offered pretty good gameplay and gorgeous visuals; though Gears had far better pc performance out of the gate. The marketing strategy doesn't make much sense if SLI is a dying trend. Why bother marketing it at all if their isnt a large market for it? This whole debate is old and always seems to result in the same conclusion that SLI is not dead, plenty of titles support, and the ones that don't you can always set it to single gpu.

Who looks at avg fps, especially on multi GPU setups.

Many times multi GPU have lower minimum fps than a single card. Not to mention frame times all over the place.

Jelly! That's going to look so freaking good! Gears 4 at 1440p is already incredibly impressive looking.
