Nvidia announced this night not only the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti , but also two faster overclocked versions of the GTX 1080 and GTX 1060 (6GB and 3GB). This was not only a surprise to the present press but also to the board partners themselves, as evidenced by demand. It is the board partners, who are to bring the higher clocked versions on the market. Nvidia's specifications for Founders Editions do not change, but instead, Asus, EVGA, Gainward / Palit, Gigabyte, Inno3D, KFA2, Manli, MSI, PNY and Zotac can buy the faster memory and solder on their OC models.

In the case of the GeForce GTX 1080, GDDR5X memory can now be used with 11 Gigabit per second, which clocks at 5.500 MHz. Up to now, only 10-Gbps GDDR5X from Micron, which the manufacturers seldom overclocked by a few hundred MHz, was available. Zotac went the furthest with the GTX 1080 Amp Extreme with 5.400 MHz . A GTX 1080 with 11 Gbps GDDR5X reaches 352 GB / s, OC versions could be somewhat faster. In the case of the GTX 1060, Nvidia allows the use of GDDR5 memory chips specified at 9 Gbps. Previous custom designs have got a maximum of 100 to 4.100 MHz, new models can run at 4,500 MHz (or minimum). The transmission rate increases accordingly to a good 216 GB / s.

If i'm telling this to my friend , he will turn into a fury with his slower 1080

IMO they should end that 1060 3GB & launch a cut down 6GB 1060 with spec like these = 1024 core/192bit/7Gbps GDDR5.

that is still quite a gap from a full 1060 = which is 1280 core/192bit/9Gbps

No mostly not all will be amused about that but it hasnt been confirmed yet so ...

1060s scale like crazy with memory overclocks.

My current GTX 1060 overclocks to 4500 on the memory already. Fyi

Ditto, 9Ghz stable 24/7, 9.2GHz stable for most games but not intensive 24/7 computation. The scaling with RAM isn't something impressive, helps sure but not noticeable beyond hunting benchmark scores or the last decimal point of FPS.
So another year of no GPU launches? Novideo rebrand of a rebrand, AMD rebrand, ...

To be fair, we did get a GP102 at a somewhat more reasonable price and were getting Vega in may. GPU refreshes aren't what they used to be due to how expensive the node it. Its only going to get worse from here.

This is probably more beneficial to the 1060. I OC'ed my G1s when I had them and even at 4K, the performance difference was negligible. No reason for current owners to be upset, honestly.

I'm already sitting on 5600Mhz on my 1080...do these newer chips then clock higher?..doesn't really worry me much, this is the tech world, new things come out all the time.

they're pretty much like the boost vs non-boost cards that AMD released, just minor clock speed bump.
although AMD did add a few tweaks and additional features to the revised cards.

Is Vega really coming in may or is that just rumors as well? I've been putting off getting a new GPU for too long now.

Isn't it AMD chasing Nvidia? I suspect the 1080Ti was launched for 2 reasons: 1.to lock up all the dollars they could before AMD releases as only the truly hardest corps guys will buy more than 1 card a year and 2. To set the peak performance at a level where there is nowhere for the vega to go. I mean how much faster can current technology actually drive a gpu?
Either way AMD launches and it fails unless it really beats out the 1080Ti with a sub $600 price or it is 1080 competition at a sub $400 price point. Tough shoes to fill either way imao

Greatest thing is this is one fight that has truly benefited the consumer regardless of outcome. Now if we can only get the store shelves full so we can all take advantage of these upgrades:thumb:

edited for grammer, apparently I am still riding the short bus

If Vega outperforms 1080ti, AMD will be able to sell it for more than $600. Non FE ti's are probably going to be $750 or more, if AMD manages to outrun it they will be able to charge similar. There is no longer a platform advantage for Nvidia users so there is no reason AMD needs to sell 120% performance for 80% of the price.

doesnt need to, beating 1080Ti even at same price is already a winner.

NO matter how I see it, Vega need to be fast enough make Nvidia release a non-TITAN fully enabled GP102. (much like how 290X forcing Nvidia to release 780Ti)

anything fall short of that is a failure, considering how large vega's die size is.

The GTX 1060 already has rather quick RAM at 8GHZ effective , it's just the 192 bit memory bus is smaller than the GTX 1070 and GTX 980.

Jumping to 216 GB/s from 192 GB/s via 9GHz memory modules seems like the economical solution.

GDDR5X with the same memory bus would give it 240 GB/s instead of 192GB/s (just under the GTX 1070's 256 GB/s).

I don't think AMD can afford to undercut Nvidia too much with Vega because of HBM2. Nvidia made a smart move going with cheaper GDDR5X and extracting the most performance out of it and it doesn't need the added cost of an interposer. Plus, the die area size of GP102 which is about 471mm2, is much smaller compared to Fiji and GM200. What Nvidia has right now is a high-performance, cost efficient design so they have competitive price-performance flexibility to deal with whatever RTG throws at them. I think the price cuts for the 1080 and the 1060 as well as launching the 1080 Ti are preemptive moves against Vega. It's nice that Nvidia does not underestimate AMD as much as Intel does.
