Well, I asked for an invoice for his lineset here: http://under-the-ice.com/product_info.php?cPath=49&products_id=138
The guy seems pretty cool and talking to him has alleviated my worries about sending money to a random website, but I'm worried I have annoyed him with questions tongue.gif

I'll wait for a day and see if he sends the invoice, then email again.

The kit seems cool. It comes with Chilly1 evap, universal mounting kit, flex line, cap tube and insulation. Then I'll just need condensing unit + compressor. I'll see about using what I have right now, but I'm not really convinced it'll work well.

This is the kit ^

EDIT:

Also, on a sidenote, I sort of inherited a Nikon D3000 with a couple lenses. Hopefully I'll be able to take some nice quality shots of progress and stuff biggrin.gif

Ron is cool and is always up for helping with questions, he was very active on XS in the past, he might still be but I haven't been there for a while.

Thanks for the feedback. He seemed like he knew what he was talking about (and I suspect that he, in fact, did biggrin.gif )
I asked a few questions and requested an invoice yesterday. He responded to the questions and I haven't heard back on the invoice yet. So I don't know what to expect.

As he is the only one I've found selling direct die evaps, I hope this works out biggrin.gif

So I've heard back now. He said it'll take a week or two for the invoice. I'm well prepared to wait a week or two. I have other things I need to check on anyways.

Another thing I wanted to check is if I could squeeze a TEC1-19940 in between the phase change evap and the cpu... Not sure if I'm just losing efficiency at that point, but man would it be cool.

You would need to handle the heat generated in the TEC in addition to that from the CPU. You could put a big hot plate onto the TEC and squeeze three or four evaporators onto that to get enough cooling power perhaps. It depends how much heat one evaporator can handle but I guess one wouldn't be enough.

I guess -70C for a setup like that!

Hahaha three or four evaporators would be insane. That's not really within the realm of reasonable for me.

So, I clocked my opteron to 4.8GHz and it was drawing in the neighborhood of 150w. I'm guessing when I get it where I want it, it'll be closer to 200-220w.
under-the-ice, which is where I'm getting the evap has a single stage phase change unit with a 3/4hp 18cc compressor. He list it as capable of cooling 300w to -34c.

What I'm worried about is that I'll throw the TEC1-19940 in the middle and barely scrape even (-40c) cooling the 500w load from the CPU + TEC.
I don't know if that's gonna be worth it. But... If I could get a different refrigerant, my cooling capacity should change...
In a situation like this, it would be better to have a larger cooling capacity and a higher possible temperature than a lower cooling capacity and a lower possible temperature.

Probably obviously, I need to do some research into refrigerants and how this is gonna work. In the end, I'd be happy with just a phase change unit, but I wanna be at least a little unique biggrin.gif

Well... theoretically without load, the phase change unit would hold -35c ish and the TEC1-19940 would hold another -30c over it which is... cold. But you also lose efficiency as you get colder, so I don't know what the actual dT would be at that range...

Okay, so I wonder if @emsj86 or @BackwoodsNC could give me a word of advice here.
I'm trying to spec out a compressor. It will be used with the Chilly1 evap kit seen above. There's really two big factors I'm looking for here:

I want to be able to cool 250-300w to -30's.
I want the size of the condensing unit to be manageable.

Two phase change units that I really like are:

DaGuv's... He's using R507, which... if I'm right... is a mix of two refrigerants. R125 and R143a.

So, the questions I've started accruing are:

  • What refrigerants fit this application well (apart from r134a and r404a)?
  • Is a condenser small enough to be cooled with a 140mm fan enough ... and how would I know?
  • Is there a name for compressor/condensing units that are that small?

Edit:
From searching, it's sounding like I could definitely get pretty cold temps, but if I want the 300w dissipation at -30c's it's likely not gonna happen with a compressor small enough to fit in my case.

Yea mines just R134 it keeps about 180w at 0-2c idle I try not let it get to low as only use water and methanol and freezes at - 10c but on my old i7 at 4.8ghz 1.4volt it was great never got above 0

Only downside with mine is due to the gas tubes around the res freeze the water inside the tank so the 2l of coolant takes ages to cool down before I turn the pc on as where it insulated the cold side from the rest of the water
2l went In the res when I drained it 0. 5 came out the rest was frozen and that was about 35 mins after I turned the chiller and pc off as I was getting horrible temps and it was the coolant froze inside I was getting drips for over 2 hours waiting for it to defrost inside and get the rest of the 1.5l out the res was stupid and can't get antifreeze only that ready mixed summer stuff that's crap..

Sounds like your problem is almost solely that you need better coolant tongue.gif
Did you opt for a chiller for convenience or performance?

I know the biggest problem I was running into with wanting to do direct die is the lack of tools for the job.

Potentially stupid question... Could you create a watercooled condenser and would there benefits to it over air cooled?
