[Various] Preview of AMD "Naples" server CPU - Page 12

You do realize were talking about a collection of silicon that cost more than my 2016 auto did new? Cool, if it reflects lower price for my next gaming rig. I have bought cars in the past from a junk yard. Nothing wrong with it except toasted engine and trans and still spent less that my 1st attempt to put together a super duper gaming rig. Oh and the Ranger I bought and did that to? Got tired of driving it (100,000 miles later) and sold it still running and the super duper rig died and the GPU was obsolete. 6 years use for both. My 8350 rig barely makes it for use with ME Andromeda @ 1080i. The video card (GTX 690) cost more than the tranny rebuild and instalI. I paid somebody to to put it in, because I was too busy.

Edit: So A Naples would need how many sets of ECC ram at 4 per set ($700) to play Crysis?

The only problem is that some games need four threads to run, but if you hack the executable it's fine. A 6GHz 7350K is really the best bet these days.

I was being sarcastic.

I have no problem playing ME:A on my 8320 @ 4.5 and 290 @ 1125/1350.

If other BOINC projects update their code Milkyway@Home will be epic.

I agree with what others have said... Why run just Folding@Home when there are numerous projects in BOINC that can also be run on the GPU's. Run both! ^_^

I doubt AMD can get good market share in server market. It managed to ruin its name so bad that sales will be very poor even with a good product. It will take years to restore faith in AMD there.

How do you even have rep?

Regardless AMD should make a dent as many companies are tired of paying ridiculous prices for mediocre performance. AMD has already secured a number of contracts and has shown recently that it's Naples system is faster than Intel's best in some benchmarks.

Server market is consist of professionals who look at benchmark before buying. They do not care what the name of the product is. All they care about is performance and cost.

I see AMD winning in both segments in the coming months

Functionality support, ecosystem maturity and SLA's just to name a few more of things they also look at. Raw power and efficiency aren't the only variables in the equation.
