Went W10 Creators ISO yesterday rolleyes.gif , just to have the MS full experience tongue.gif .

Firstly I have Win 7 Pro from launch retail edition. I had not selected free Win 10 upgrade when it was around, but done an install of W10 ISO using my retail Win 7 key on i5/Z97 after the free upgrade period. I had not used a MS account, just local. CPU/RAM sold, mobo soon to be, so couldn't boot into W10 and align with a MS account, etc. Quick online chat to MS support and W10 activated on W10 Creators edition.

Next 3DM13 benches and some Power Plan compares.

All 3 plans defaults 1x run each. Results 3 & 5 have min CPU 5% mod only. IMO Ryzen PP at it's defaults pants for 3DM13.

Then I went default Balanced with CP 100% 50% 25% 1x run each. Now as other members seem to have posted Balanced 50% was good for them and comparing to 3x Win 7 runs I was missing ~1000 marks. Win 7 HP with min CPU 5% so down clocking occur with CP: 100% (ie disabled).

I disabled FreeSync in driver and monitor, Balanced with CP: 50% got me near Win 7 performance.

High Performance with min CPU 5% and CP: 25% 50% 100%.

Ryzen with min CPU 5% and CP: 25% 50% 100%.

Windows 7 Pro High Performance with min CPU 5% and CP: 100% is consistently good and benches better, 6x runs.

Gonna do some more W10 benches / games FPS, etc, but I think I will be using W7 as daily OS, like I did on i5/Z97.

Cheers for the tip smile.gif , don't think it's running but will check. Mainly I just do "Privacy" tweaks, OneDrive removal and some other bits.

My experience with W10 is lacking. I used it for TimeSpy benches only on i5/Z97. Using it on R7/X370 to see if better performing for my daily uses, wasn't any difference on i5/Z97 and preferred W7.

One silver lining to W10 is "Sleep" is working, wasn't on W7. OS on resume would do as it it had crashed, ie ask do I wish to do normal launch or repair. I was on an older UEFI at the time, older microcode/SMU FW, I may try W7 again for "Sleep", as have it on other SSD.

Benefit of "Sleep" / "Resume" is pretty much instant action to desktop, full boot too slow on Ryzen from shutdown. Where as my i5/Z97 was so fast on cold boot that by the time my hand went from case power button to switch on monitor and it finished manufacturer splash logo screen, I was in OS.

In other news 3.9GHz as 3+3 ie R5 emulation on a known good R7 3.8GHz OC did not work.

The 3.8GHz normal 8C/16T profile has been tested "back to back" Y-Cruncher > custom x264 > f@h > RB with office/web use at those times (whilst awake) over a course of 36hrs.

So all I change in UEFI is:-

i) AMD CBS > Core/Threads section to to 3+3

ii) PState 0 to 3.9GHz from 3.8GHz.





After this screenie I start x264. Temps were ~8°C lower (ie ~57°C current) than 8C/16T, I'm comparing a very short run from cold boot vs long run on 8C/16T 3.8GHz. It got to ~10% of loop 1, I got Q-Code 8 board = CPU instability.

I did not increase voltage from what I need on R7 3.8GHz OC profile. The reason being why was the "thoughts" being raised in owners thread to me inferred less active cores = more headroom. So it should have done OC, I'd wiped out 25% cores.

R7 3.8GHz ACB OC profile needs +162mV, ProbeIt points ~1.380V, CPU Core Voltage (SVI2 TFN) MAX is ~1.356V. You will find this profile has been tested ~36hrs+ "back to back", screenies within the thread. R7 3.9GHz ACB OC profile needs +250mV, ProbeIt points ~1.475V, CPU Core Voltage (SVI2 TFN) MAX is ~1.444V. All results are LLC: [Auto] ie AMD stock.

The 3.9GHz was tested with x264 only, as voltage too high for my 24/7 use I didn't test further for stability, RB needs a lot less voltage. I posted before that initial testing of an OC profile passed 2hrs RB Stress mode 16GB, but x264 on 1st loop bomb. 4.0GHz is working on 3.9GHz profile for benches.

To me, as a guesstimate from quick test yesterday. The voltage point required for 3.9GHz ACB on a R7 emulating a R5, for stability testing I would wish to do. Is going to be no different than when no cores are disabled.

I will do some more testing if members would like to see my results?

After last nights quick test I reckon waste of time to go about disabling cores for a higher OC. I got a R7 for more cores wink.gif , but see the "intrigue" of disabling cores / SMT could hold for others. All I've read on the subject seems we're looking at no difference to so small a change for "headroom" that hardly worth the effort. I'd rather spend the time getting W10 "tweaked" and tested to know if I miss out on anything vs W7, as I'm really luving the "Sleep" mode.

Yeah I wouldn't imagine you could run at a lower voltage just by switching cores off (unless maybe you happened to switch off the two lowest-quality cores).

I think the guy was thinking the 1600X might be binned higher than a 1700 though, and so could maybe run at a higher frequency (3.9 - 4.0) with a similar voltage as a 1700 at a lower frequency (3.8 - 3.9). But that would require a different chip, so turning cores off on a 1700 isn't really the same thing.

My thinking was that maybe you could run at a higher voltage on a 6-core simply because you would have more thermal headroom as opposed to an octo. Still though, that only makes sense if you were limited by thermals in the first place. Like, say, if you were using the stock cooler, your case has bad airflow, or you live in the desert biggrin.gif
One could perhaps argue that having lower temps somewhat mitigate the negative effects caused by higher voltage in terms of chip degradation/lifespan, but if I'm being honest I'm not 100% sure that would be the case.

I don't regard thermals holding me back at moment. Regardless I go 8 core or less.

For me, more so it is voltage needed for x OC. Which again from what The Stilt has stated in the context of non "X" = low leakage = higher voltage = lower current draw and so on, is on the money what we're seeing. As I said in the owners thread the "X" CPU just have that edge over non "X" CPU IMO.

So I scratched my head for a while why IBT AVX was not passing my 3.8GHz OC profile, which was perfectly fine in other stability tests. I disabled UAC, tried various UEFI, but I was not willing to at all increase any voltages, as to me it seemed when I could pass other stability tests for such long lengths as shown in my posts in this thread why would IBT need extra. I choose to ignore IBT AVX and just crack on with other stuff.

So the message in W7.





No matter if it was 1 loop , 3 loops, 10 loops I had above and no error in between loops.

Something in W7 is up with ...





I had full clean W7 Pro x64 SP1 and all updates, but something must be a miss in OS that IBT AVX needed.
