Newbies new build with blank screen - possible memory problem? Help appreciated. - Page 3

No, 6800K doesn't fit in Z170 or Z270 boards, only X99.

If you'd want to swap out the motherboard you'd have to get a new processor as well, 7700K for example. But that would also be a worse processor than your current one, depending on what you do with it of course. If you do any rendering/encoding, video, audio or anything like that, the 6800K is going to be superior. But if you game, the 7700K will be faster in most cases.
This all still seems rather extreme to do just because of a RAM kit that didn't work with your motherboard.

The truth is - You'll probably get more money back if you switch to Z270 + 7700K but are you really ready to swap out more powerful components to inferior ones just because of RAM?

At the moment there isn't a single X99 board that supports your RAM so you'll have to get a new kit.

I think that someone may be trying to tell me something.

I bought that RAM from MindFactory.de two weeks ago for about €480.00.

It's now €698.53!!! http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/64GB-G-Skill-Trident-Z-DDR4-3000-DIMM-CL14-Quad-Kit_1033416.html

I'd happily get me money back and save someone €218.00.

Ideally, I'd like to exchange it though. I've written to MindFactory. Awaiting a reply.

Thanks for your help.

D.

Ps. If you have RAM that you could suggest that I could replace it with (preferably available from MindFactory) I'm all ears! Thanks.

Whoa, had no idea those cost that much right now! nerdsmiley.png

Anyhow, here's a couple of kits you could get.

2 kits of these: http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/32GB-Corsair-Vengeance-LPX-schwarz-DDR4-3200-DIMM-CL16-Quad-Kit_1021701.html

or

2 kits of these: http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/32GB-Corsair-Vengeance-LPX-DDR4-3000-DIMM-CL15-Dual-Kit_1016618.html

Both should work straight out the box.

Thanks.

You sure they'll work? The product QVL codes in the ASUS MB manual differ slightly.

The 3200 is CMD16GX4M4A3200C16 (only one Corsair listed)

In 3000, there are two Corsair listed, both 16Gb. Codes begin CMD16GX..... and CMK16GX.....

Question: If I buy two sets of 2 x 16Gb totalling 64Gb (I'd prefer this to 8 x 8Gb) that aren't sold as a set of 4 x 16Gb (like the set I have now) do they have to be set up in some way to work together?

Thanks again.

Ps. There are no 4 x 16Gb sets in the manual that I can see.

Only 64Gb sets at any speed are all 8x8Gb.

Both of those RAMs are on the "up to date" list
http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA2011/X99-A/X99_Series_DRAM_QVL_for_i7-69xx_68xx_processors.pdf?_ga=1.190582891.1775150741.1489830958

CMK32GX4M4B3200C16

CMK32GX4M2B3000C15

No, it doesn't require any advanced tweaking to make two sets of 2 x 16Gb work together.

One option to all this could be to just buy the cheapest universally compatible RAM stick you can find, this for example: http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/4GB-HyperX-FURY-schwarz-DDR4-2133-DIMM-CL14-Single_994596.html
Then stick it in, update your BIOS and after that swap the RAM out to your current 64GB kit and test if it boots. As it might just do that. Even if it doesn't you've got yourself a safe to go RAM module that works with pretty much any DDR4 board and helps with any future troubleshooting.

Sorted....I think.

I flashed the BIOS with the latest iteration - released only last week - & rebooted. The computer restarted itself a few times for 5 minutest and then the red RAM led went out.

I can now see the screen! smile.gif

Happy days.
