Not true. They're trying to maintain their influence in the midrange market. It means nothing for their enthusiast vega line.

I think it is more of reviews using the newer SKU with newer drivers (i..e better drivers) resulting in better reviews of what is essentially the same thing.

People will buy the newer version based on better reviews even if it is the same thing.

Does this mean we can expect 1,500-1600mhz overclock's on average?

If they see improved they are going to show it by refreshing the card. Nvidia is doing it with 11Gbps G5X and 9Gbps G5. If this change was applied to current card it would create a lot of confusion and never get to see the light from reviews.

Granted these were not common occurrences, but 480's can be found on the reg for ~$160 AR. 470's have been on Jet for sub $115 AR many times over the past few months.

Pretty crazy deals. RX480 is very good 1440p card. Dam PC gaming is so cheap these days.

Professional writing as always thanks to Hilbert's excellent proofreading. rolleyes.gif

If this is true though, it might explain the rumors of the alleged 95W RX 480 rebrands. That seems very low, but if the fab is improved enough and voltage can be reduced enough, it doesn't seem completely impossible. I believe that would also put Polaris ahead of Pascal in terms of performance/power, which seems implausible. Still, nothing more than a new stepping allowed AMD to cut Phenom x6s from 125W to 95W years ago, so a new process should allow even more than that.

To be fair, it isn't always pointless. The many iterations of the 7870 included more and faster VRAM with time, and the 390 and 390X offered twice the VRAM of their predecessors. I'm honestly not as familiar with Nvidia, but I think the 770 ran a bit faster than the 680 stock. Looking back at it, Kepler didn't actually have many exact rebrands in the desktop space, though laptops are a different story. Still not as bad as AMD's 19 separate 7770 clones.

There are already official 95W Ellesmere based designs, but for the embedded market.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/10710/amd-announces-embedded-radeon-e9260-e9550

Couple of interesting things in that article, really. The 95W Ellesmere chip runs at the same frequencies (on paper) as the RX 480, but with slightly slower RAM, at below <=95W (on paper). Also there's an 896 shader chip that's supposed to run at 1.4GHz, though I wonder if it's actually 1024 shaders at 1.2GHz or so.

Just wait til the 4c 8t ryzens hit. $170 CPU, $80 Mobo, $160 GPU gets you a crazy capable gaming PC.

But a 28nm Kepler GTX600 to a 28nm Kepler GTX700 or a 28nm AMD HD7000 to a 28nm AMD RX200 or 28nm AMD RX300 (except Fury) are all simply rebrands?

So basically, there has never been a CPU rebrand, but there have been plenty of GPU rebrands.
