[Guru3D] Star Citizen to go Vulkan exclusively - Page 4

I hope, that if some code rewrite is necessary, they will do it in proper way, and not in "console > PC port" crap way.

Again? It feels like we're going through one API change per month.

How could they justify this....

Well.. from the beginning they did mention Linux support. This seems a surefire way to get that. I really see no problem with it as it seems more a branch in development than some drastic "scrap and replace" decision.

Huh? You could refer me back to where this game changed or even mentioned API's in the past?

A linux version is planned, so it makes sense to exclusively use Vulkan instead of wasting time and money producing a DX version and a Vulkan/OpenGL version.

As for the game itself & its moving target release date, that is another debate I won't get into. All I'll say is I hope the game turns out well and is a good example of Vulkan's capabilities in the end, among other things.

Not to mention the performance. In most games I play I lose performance enabling DX12, especially the division.
Most of the time I stick to DX11 if I have a choice between 12/11. However my very limited collection of 1 vulkan game, runs like a dream(DOOM).

It could be that they took too much on their plate. DX11, then claiming they will do mantle support and started on it, they claimed they are moving to DX12 but they will do openGL as well. It could be that the developer just kept changing his mind constantly out of "omg a new API! lets throw everything and do that!".

This is going to be a recurring theme in my reply... but you "clearly don't understand game development." That's a joke, many people do understand it and they understand this is vaporware. In the official thread on Overclock there has been a lot of back and forth between the "faithful" and the people in the real world. This game isn't coming out because the head of the project has ADD and uses too much cocaine.

Not reasonable people, but plenty of people living in a sunk cost fallacy do. I consider my 200 flushed, but there are people so invested in this game that I think they would literally defend it to the death. There are various reasons and theories as to why.

That's almost certainly true.

Also, what about SC makes it above reproach? Don't tell me you are about to pull out the "If you don't spend money than you can criticize" statement! All Star Citizen has managed to do is vacuum up a whole lot of cash and produce a few tech demos. Until something substantial and formative come from it we can continue to criticize the development cycle it has lived by.

On top of that we also have the multitude of exoduses from the project and their accompanying statements which have never painted a great picture. Star Citizen is just another Curt Schilling 2.0 waiting to happen.

No no you don't understand game development. This is perfectly normal having a 4th API change. and 2nd engine change (yes they literally changed engines last year.) Game is in it's 5th year of development and isn't even out of pre-alpha stage. Perfectly normal.

I'm not defending it, I'm more than happy to acknowledge that it might not even come out in it's intended form. But just from playing the Alpha, I've got more enjoyment from it than a lot of other games.

Change to Vulkan is undoubtedly for the best.

"no understanding of game development." This is a battlecry I heard on the official forums before I realized I was in an echo chamber full of zealots and fundamentalists. I've probably tech demo'd a lot more of Star Citizen than you have and it is in no way making any progress. Enjoyment is subjective, I won't rob you of any enjoyment you got out of the game, but a large swath of reasonable people think he should have stuck with the original scope and not put this project into development hell. Many of them have gotten refunds. I did not simply because the TROUBLE they have made it to get your money back is not worth my time.

So you think the change to OpenGL 4.0 was for the best? Or the change to DX12 or possibly the change to lumberyard? I'm just curious which change is the one that is going to make Chris Roberts finally settle down and let the programmers do their jobs instead of refactoring all the time. the PU has had no progress besides a few models and one UI change in 2 YEARS. Squadron 42. which was "almost finished" back in late 2015 has not been released... You know.. 2014. 2015 2016 2017 and now 2018 release dates.

Get your money if you have more than 200 like me sunk in this thing. Get it out now and stop defending this junk.

Folks remember this.. If EA or Ubisoft did this developing a game this forum and others like it would be on fire with rage.

Budget will be over 1 billion dollars before beta, lol. These devs probably have a mansion made of heroin bricks by now with all the tithes they're receiving.

"Mind explaining what those are?"

"Uh...dev tools."

What they're saying is that they're forcing Vulkan only. Almost definitely because they've found it more powerful/flexible for what they want to do, and they don't want to have to dance around trying to get the same out of DX12. If anything focusing on a single API (which their game engine ALREADY HAS SUPPORT FOR) will cut down development time.

Once again, I'll repeat. It's always amusing to see people hate on Star Citizen. Especially when it's obvious they have no understanding of game development.

You are a bit wrong.

Star citizen started with an earlier version of cryengine which did not support DX12 nor vulkan, which they heavily modified. That "switch" you are talking about, never happened, nor could happen in the engine they were using. Switching engine also is not a flip of a switch.

In december 2016 (not really a long long time ago), they were in the start of their move to Lumberyard. Lumberyard, as far as I remember, is not a DX12 nor a vulkan supporting game engine as well.

So switching from a game engine which does not support vulkan, to a fully vulkan API work, isn't just a "between DX and Vulkan internally". It is not something you do in a month, or two, or three.

And no, they did not say that they are "forcing vulkan only". They stated that they are changing their whole API calls to match vulkan. Read the article and their statement.

When Star Citizen was announced I was giddy with excitement and looking forward to one day playing it. Now I know I'll be long dead and gone before it ever sees a full release.
