[Guru3D] Star Citizen to go Vulkan exclusively - Page 5

As pointed out, SC is not your average/normal game. When it was announced it did NOT have the funding a game typically would have had. Also, it was announced before any real funding was in place.

Put it simply, the first year or so was a time when they didn't have resources to make the game. In 2004 Dollars HL2 cost about $40M to make. To make HL2 in 2017 it would cost upwards of $48M now just for inflation. Never mind increased regulations and other factors.

Let me put this in perspective, per Star Citizen Wiki.

On October 25, 2012 Star Citizen started with $2M in cash for game development. 1 year later that number rose to $24.7M. Not much when it comes to an MMO really. Then in October of 2014 it had raised about $58.9M. In my eyes, first 2-3 years of SC was securing funding.

i see that there are a few "Derek smart" fans around.
i think people should just hold before throwing their money away, unless ofc if you want to support the development
its a crowdfunding game afterall

This project surely will take some time

It's an excuse to delay the game further. It's a pyramid scheme where every feature they add lets them delay it longer.

That's a red herring argument. No one gives a crap what Derek Smart says, just because he agrees with the fact it's a scam doesn't make it less of one.

This is going to be a recurring theme in my reply... but you "clearly don't understand game development." That's a joke, many people do understand it and they understand this is vaporware. In the official thread on Overclock there has been a lot of back and forth between the "faithful" and the people in the real world. This game isn't coming out because the head of the project has ADD and uses too much cocaine.
Not reasonable people, but plenty of people living in a sunk cost fallacy do. I consider my 200 flushed, but there are people so invested in this game that I think they would literally defend it to the death. There are various reasons and theories as to why.
That's almost certainly true.
No no you don't understand game development. This is perfectly normal having a 4th API change. and 2nd engine change (yes they literally changed engines last year.) Game is in it's 5th year of development and isn't even out of pre-alpha stage. Perfectly normal.
"no understanding of game development." This is a battlecry I heard on the official forums before I realized I was in an echo chamber full of zealots and fundamentalists. I've probably tech demo'd a lot more of Star Citizen than you have and it is in no way making any progress. Enjoyment is subjective, I won't rob you of any enjoyment you got out of the game, but a large swath of reasonable people think he should have stuck with the original scope and not put this project into development hell. Many of them have gotten refunds. I did not simply because the TROUBLE they have made it to get your money back is not worth my time.

So you think the change to OpenGL 4.0 was for the best? Or the change to DX12 or possibly the change to lumberyard? I'm just curious which change is the one that is going to make Chris Roberts finally settle down and let the programmers do their jobs instead of refactoring all the time. the PU has had no progress besides a few models and one UI change in 2 YEARS. Squadron 42. which was "almost finished" back in late 2015 has not been released... You know.. 2014. 2015 2016 2017 and now 2018 release dates.

Get your money if you have more than 200 like me sunk in this thing. Get it out now and stop defending this junk.

Folks remember this.. If EA or Ubisoft did this developing a game this forum and others like it would be on fire with rage.

Thank you for the smiles, that was hugely entertaining.

I mean, not because you were correct at all, but it was just great to put that kind of smile on my face. The sky really is falling chicken little, it's OK.

This project could be vaporware, but not for any of the reasons you listed in your entire post. For as much as you like to call out those oracles for 'knowing' how development works, they are right. You're big engine change that you called out? Modified CryEngine to Lumberyard, which is based on..... CryEngine!!!

Code refactoring for an interface is a cleanup job that can be done by a relatively small number of developers in short order, and that is just so you make your method signatures match the Vulkan API. They were likely already passing and managing most of the same objects regardless, so this isn't all doom and gloom.

You and your large number of people can say, shout, rant, and moan about whatever course of action you think they should have made, but at the end of the day this is their game to make or vaporize... Not yours.

The above doesn't endorse either side in this argument, just ripping apart your patently false arguments.

This game makes people emo.
What makes them emo is donating a month's pay to fuel coke parties and tech demos. I bet Chris Roberts is the big man on campus at the Bunny Ranch.
we got like so much stuff in 2017 biggrin.gifthumb.gif
post #49 of 110
I love and hate how Star Citizen seems to throw OCN into rage. More so, if I'm not mistaken, than any other early access game.

Yes, I donated and received a ship. Am I a fool? Nobody knows till the project is declared dead in the water. Did I help fuel a game that may give me years and years of entertainment? I hope.

SC started in late 2012; it's early 2017. It may be in early access, but it has a fully playable portion of the game to enjoy with a very open roadmap. It's not like they inhaled a couple million dollars and went into hiding to develop the title. What they have after 5 years is pretty good considering the scale of the universe they want.

Chris Roberts has been involved in developing games since the earlt 1990's (Wing Commander, Wing Commander II (Produced), Strike Commander, and various sequels). I don't believe someone in the industry that takes pride in his work would put his career and reputation on the line to snag a small fortune and disappear.

Crysis was a "tech demo", and it is still my favorite FPS ever released. Different tastes for different folks. Calling this a tech demo is a little early. If, once the final game is released, it's underwhelming, then it can be called a demo.

"Yes, the game is continuing development for the foreseeable future. Yes we are having massive delays, but it was a donation for an early access game, you should have expected this. Name the # of games that, under EA (Early Access), came out exactly when planned?"... Or "Star Citizen put on hold indefinitely". I still believe it's going to be released. We have a playable portion, an open roadmap, and a lead developer with a history of successful games under his belt.

I'm sure a majority of people enraged with every delay are ones who have put down money. They didn't have to. I put down $140. And until we get a letter directly from Cloud Imperium stating failure, I can't be mad. I'll patently wait.

I'll just sit here with my popcorn and hope for the best.jerry.gif

Something as complex this game, you don't just switch out a major architecture layer for free.

It would probably be treated as fork.
