What do you guys think. 8350 still viable?

Just a little story. I got laid off last year and things after unemployment got so bad i had zero choice but to sell my last pc setup. I ended up meeting someone in the military and he turned out to be a pc gamer as well. We talked for awhile and he wanted to help out. Told me he had many gaming setups and had one he never used so he told me 150 cash and its mine.

Anyways to make a long story short i scraped up 150 and bought this system from him. I dont know hardly anything about AMD so im not sure how the cpu compares to newer stuff and is its still a viable cpu for todays gaming.

Specs

AMD 8350 4.0ghz
Asus sabertooth 990fx 2.0
16GB Gskill ddr3 1600
AMD 6850 1gb
XFX pro 750
Samsung 840 pro 128gb ssd
2tb seagate barracuda
Phanteks PH-TC14PE
Cougar challenger case
DVD burner
Pioneer BDXL bluray drive
Windows 10 home

x8 fans in total. All green LED x4 cooler master fans. X2 xigmatek and x2 cougar fans. He also included a wireless logitech k360 keyboard.

Obviously when i start working again ill have to get a good mouse snd replace the video card.

FX 6 or 8 core makes for very solid 1080p gaming rig with a decent enough GPU. I would've paid $150 for that setup, not bad.

I think the 8350 is still viable for a few years to come. It may not be as great, but it'll still be good. There are still people who are running with the AMD Phenom II Cpu's, for gaming.
My AMD Fx8320 (even running at stock speed) with R9 390x is capable of performing ideally (for VR) according to Steam VR Mark.

That CPU compares an i5 for gaming and maybe to even an i7 for some multi-threaded productivity workloads.

I'm sure someone will chime in and say "but its slower than an i3 for Skyrim", ya, I hear ya, but thats only one game and not how the majority of games run...

Sabertooth is a nice board too smile.gif

Sorry about your layoff. Going though the same thing myself frown.gif

Your fine. GPU will show its age but thats it. You will have to use high instead of ultra super deluxe high.

For $150 it's a very competent rig. Obviously GPU is weakest link and holding you back, but otherwise very solid. Sabertooth was one of the very best AM3 boards made. CPU heatsink is also top notch, albeit huge. Get comfortable clocking up the 8350, as-is the rig can hit 4.6 easily with some time spent tuning. Tighten up the RAM to cas8, grab a modern GPU when you can, and that will last you another 2-3 years.

Keep your head up with the job, happens to everyone.

Yeah i figured the gpu was the worse part. I sold my ps3 and 360 for the 150. Im looking everyday for work. Got a few good leads right now.

I dont have a choice but to work wife is expecting pur third in june and we have to move june 1st.

I like the pc it runs fast and i will explore some overclocking. The phantek cooler is a giant. Covers half the board and cant see any ram.

My cousin had a PII 1090T in just an absolutely terrible motherboard with DDR2 RAM, and recently redid I that for her with a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 and R9 480x...

Very quick CPU, and that is the really the major complaint with the FX series... not significantly faster than the Phenom II.

Still, the FX series has newer CPU instructions, instructions which are apparently necessary to run some of these newer benchmarks anyway smile.gif

I'd say $150.00 for the whole rig was a good buy, a real good buy.
