Just a little story. I got laid off last year and things after unemployment got so bad i had zero choice but to sell my last pc setup. I ended up meeting someone in the military and he turned out to be a pc gamer as well. We talked for awhile and he wanted to help out. Told me he had many gaming setups and had one he never used so he told me 150 cash and its mine.
Anyways to make a long story short i scraped up 150 and bought this system from him. I dont know hardly anything about AMD so im not sure how the cpu compares to newer stuff and is its still a viable cpu for todays gaming.
Specs
AMD 8350 4.0ghz
Asus sabertooth 990fx 2.0
16GB Gskill ddr3 1600
AMD 6850 1gb
XFX pro 750
Samsung 840 pro 128gb ssd
2tb seagate barracuda
Phanteks PH-TC14PE
Cougar challenger case
DVD burner
Pioneer BDXL bluray drive
Windows 10 home
x8 fans in total. All green LED x4 cooler master fans. X2 xigmatek and x2 cougar fans. He also included a wireless logitech k360 keyboard.
Obviously when i start working again ill have to get a good mouse snd replace the video card.
I think the 8350 is still viable for a few years to come. It may not be as great, but it'll still be good. There are still people who are running with the AMD Phenom II Cpu's, for gaming.
My AMD Fx8320 (even running at stock speed) with R9 390x is capable of performing ideally (for VR) according to Steam VR Mark.
That CPU compares an i5 for gaming and maybe to even an i7 for some multi-threaded productivity workloads.
I'm sure someone will chime in and say "but its slower than an i3 for Skyrim", ya, I hear ya, but thats only one game and not how the majority of games run...
Sabertooth is a nice board too
Sorry about your layoff. Going though the same thing myself
For $150 it's a very competent rig. Obviously GPU is weakest link and holding you back, but otherwise very solid. Sabertooth was one of the very best AM3 boards made. CPU heatsink is also top notch, albeit huge. Get comfortable clocking up the 8350, as-is the rig can hit 4.6 easily with some time spent tuning. Tighten up the RAM to cas8, grab a modern GPU when you can, and that will last you another 2-3 years.
Keep your head up with the job, happens to everyone.

My cousin had a PII 1090T in just an absolutely terrible motherboard with DDR2 RAM, and recently redid I that for her with a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 and R9 480x...
Very quick CPU, and that is the really the major complaint with the FX series... not significantly faster than the Phenom II.
Still, the FX series has newer CPU instructions, instructions which are apparently necessary to run some of these newer benchmarks anyway

Very good buy. A GPU upgrade will boost thing to the moon when you get a job. You can still try to sell 6850 and add a bit of money for a used 7970 or 7950.
Wow, that guy really did you a solid selling you that rig for $150! Nice to know there are still a few nice human beings walking around the planet.
Anyway...I would do some overclocking on the CPU, and when you can, get a new GPU.
IMHO the GPU is probably the weak link in that PC.
What resolution is your display?
Currently im using a playstation 3d display So 1080p. I have 3 interviews this week and the one tomorrow is looking really good.
A gpu will have to wait a little bit tho only because there is a living situation where my landlord decided to evict us. So securing a new place is priority
Im going to see what i can do on a gpu. I was thinking about a rx 480 8gb but dont want to short myself and maybe ill save for a 1070. Before i sold my last setup i was playing witcher 3 and banked around 200 hours so id like to be able to max out that game at least

GTX1070 is a great card but the FX probably will not push it to the max. RX 480 should be able to max Witcher 3 at 1080p. By the time you buy new GPU RX 580 might be out and Vega equivalent of GTX1070. Also used GTX1080 can be had for $400 USD which I think at that price are better buy than GTX 1070. Just keep the CPU situation in mind if you play at 1080p.

Yes he was a great guy. He said he liked war and was just focused on thr military life and didnt use any of the suff so he just wanted to see his stuff go to people who would take care of it.

As far as the computer goes, that was an excellent purchase. Used FX-8350's sell for $100+ on eBay. You could probably sell it in a year or two and get all your money back if you wanted (or keep it for the memories
). But yeah, I was using an 8350 up until recently and it's a solid CPU, despite what the singlethread proponents will have you believe. You can toss nearly any game up against it and have a great 60+fps experience. Your biggest holdback will be that GPU as you already know.
I wonder what your thoughts are on choosing between a GTX 1060 and an RX 480?
I think the 8350 is still viable for a few years to come. It may not be as great, but it'll still be good. There are still people who are running with the AMD Phenom II Cpu's, for gaming.

From the research i have done there isnt much of a difference between the cards except the 480 can be crossfired and the 1060 cant.
Im going to just run the 6850 for awhile maybe 3-4 months because at this point spending 200-250 is just a bad idea when my rent is many months behind and i have 3 months to find a home for my family because of being forced out of where we are living.
When the time comes ill be going with what ever is the cheapest at that point. Weather its a 480 or 1060 or if i can find something used even cheaper as an open box or craigslist.
I did end up finding a gtx titan 6gb for 120 on craigslist but id rather wait it out. On a side note i just landed a job as a security guard start monday 14 an hour. So life is looking up again
