Hi all, I'm currently trying to build a $800 budget pc for my son and I need to come up with a solid intel cpu that will fit the build. I already have a 1tb hard drive, all the peripherals, and the case , but I still need the cpu, motherboard, gpu, power supply, and ram. Any help would be most appreciated!
Additional Information
GPU- I want to go with a gtx 1060 around $250

I know you said Intel, but i ryzen r5 -1400 4core 8thread is going to be probably the best bang for buck cpu by a long shot. They also sip power, so pretty much any AM4 motherboard would work. $270 usd would get you an 8 thread cpu + mobo if you went that route. Also it would pair really well with a 1060.
I've been hearing great things about the ryzen but I didn't realize they had one coming in at that low of a price point. I am a little concerned with some games that use the unreal engine having amd problems thats why I was steering towards intel but i'm definitly open to the suggestion.
An Intel G4560 would be good for casual gaming and net price is 65 bucks.
GTX 1060? I would sell you an MSI R9 390 8GB Gaming for 165 + shipping, if interested. Its 14 months old and will kill a 1060, and pushes new games at 1440p no problems!

Are you referring to AMD's performance with their previous chips? If so, well, it shouldn't be a problem anymore... they bumped up their IPC over 50%. The 4core 8thread ryzen should perform about the same as an ivy/haswell i7, which should be plenty for gaming and even future proofs the rig a bit. The value is insane at $170, it's also nice that it gets you on a newer platform with nvme m.2 ssd capability, ddr4, etc.. There is a $190 model that has higher stock clocks, and comes with a better cooler (I think).
Something like THIS then add on $170 for the CPU and you are in at ~$740. You could probably be fine skimping more on the RAM and PSU wattage, but it's just to give you an idea. Heck, you could probably squeeze the 6 core 12 thread ryzen in with the amount of room you have left to $800. Or maybe a little 120gig or 240gig ssd as a boot drive.

Looks pretty good Ultra thanks for the input. One question thought, how reliable are those ASrock motherboards now? I used to hear bad things but I havent kept up with it over the last few years.
Edit: additionally can you recommend a cheap after market cpu cooler that would work with that set up?

Asrock is pretty good now, and afaik, they are having a bit better luck than some of the other brands with the ddr4 clock speeds on ryzen.
As far as the cooler goes, I can't speak for the wraith stealth that comes packaged with the $170 model, but the wraith spire that is going to be packaged with the $190 model is a fantastic cooler. It's the cooler that also comes packaged with my r7 1700, and is easily the nicest stock cooler I have ever used. I'm at 1.25v @ 3.7ghz on all 8 cores right now and it has no problem cooling it. I would go higher with my OC but to be honest with you it's my VRM's that I'm worried about as they don't have heatsinks lol. The cooler is also very quiet, and looks good to boot.
The wraith spire (pictured above) that comes with the $190 ryzen r5 1500x would probably even be overkill for a 4c8t ryzen, but would ensure you could get the most out of the chip with a little OC
. I have very little doubt, though; that the wraith stealth could get you ~3.8-3.9ghz which is within a few hundred mhz of max on ryzen.

I am reusing my hyper 212+ on server and bumping stock intel cooler over to kids pic (right now it has machine screws and nuts fastening cooler on hahaha)

True. Creative, but some may call it a disaster waiting to happen. I don't think so lol
