I have a quandary and was hoping yall can shed some light on it with advice. I got permission from the wifey to do a 1500 dollar overhaul on my PC. I cannot seem to make up my mind what path would net the most enjoyment.

Budget = ~1500 USD

Here is my current specs:
i7 4970 non-k
16GB DDR 3 1600Mhz
250GB Sata 3 SSD
RX 480 8GB Vram
DIY orange generic case.
Motherboard Generic MSI B87-E45
Thermaltake 550w PSU
1080p IPS 60hz monitor

Im wanting to really "wow" myself by the next upgrade. I am dubbing the finished build "upgrayedd" For that double dose of awesome.

Now what I was thinking is keep what I have and just get a 1080ti and G34 predator monitor. But the compulsion to actually do a custom build again is strong. I have not done a custom one in years as I have just pieced parts together to make what I have now. I also wanted VR as Fallout 4 VR im hoping will be amazing.

So any of these plans sound better than the other? Or does anyone have a better bang for buck with this budget.

you have a pretty decent rig already,DDR4 isn't going to make much difference gaming, your RX480 shouldn't have any problems on a ultra wide 3440x1440p,

I think the best treat will be Ultra Wide + 1080 Ti. At 1440p Ultra Wide with max settings you will be GPU limited most of the time, so going from 4790 to 7700K won't yield much difference in your case.
As for RX480 I don't think it can cut it at 3440x1440, you will have to turn down a lot of settings in newer games as this card is mostly targeted for 1080p gaming.

Haha Im so glad sombody got that refrence. I really wanted to build a custom rig as even though this one is good looks ugly like frankenstien vomit. So maybe ill just not care about looks and go straight for the 1080ti and ultrawide. Is everyone agreed that the Predator X34 is the best option for price?

If you want it to look nicer just buy a new case...?

I was thinking the same LOL

There is honestly no point for you to upgrade to skylake/kaby lake atm wait for the refresh since you are still on DDR3 the next refresh will be a good time for you to hop onto DDR4.

Upgrading your GPU first would yield you the most gains atm for gaming uses. I upgraded from a 2600k (sandy bridge ) to 6700k (skylake) and have not received a huge boost mainly because my 2600k overclocked so well. Your CPU is still fairly new and unless you really care about saving a few minutes of render time (which actually matter a lot to some) or your computing something that takes days, then a CPU upgrade would go unnoticed especially since you aren't exactly filling the RAM buffer constantly.

A 1080ti kills the 480 by far so upgrade that first. Also monitors are sortof not talked about enough! That monitor will be what makes your PC feel new again!
Of course you can also go for a custom loop that'll completely change the look, but not sure if $1,500 can do that with those upgrades. It'll be tight.

Just get a new case if your current one bothers you, some nice cable management, LED lighting and you will have a fresh new look to your PC

I'll agree with the general sentiment that GPU & display will give you the best return. I guess what you should do for a display may depend on your interests. If you have enough free space, & would be interested in the types of games that are commonly available, a Vive might be a worthwhile investment. If you're into racing or flight games that support VR it would be a much better purchase than a standard monitor. If you mostly play FPS games, a high refresh rate monitor may suit your needs better. I wouldn't put money into motherboard, CPU, or RAM yet. If you're really tired of seeing your orange case, you could buy a pretty nice one for $100+/- & transfer everything over without having to stretch your budget much. I'd personally recommend something like the Phanteks Enthoo Pro or Enthoo Pro M, but there are a lot of other nice options out there as well.

Edit: We also need pics of this fabled Frankenstein vomit case.

It is a DIY orange case im being dramatic but not by much. What I really hate is the stock case stock mobo and non-k cpu. If yall think thats all fine and good, I will ignore my stupid OCD about building an all "new" rig. I think yall are right and its better to get the 1080ti and Ultrawide. Im taking suggestions for an ultrawide while we ar here. Ill for sure do a build log for "Upgrayedd". lol
