Socket 775 project - Page 2

Those chips get hot pretty easily so I'd be careful on clocking it too much higher with that cooler. I always used under 85C during stress as a good rule for cooling my Q9550.

Alright. I was wondering about temps since obviously real world temps will never get this high. I have noticed. Temps jump real Quick. Right now I have it clocked at 3.6ghz. While stress testing 2 of the 4 cores touched 80-82c. The other 2 were 76-78c. I definitely won't go any higher than this. And I really don't think I'll spend anymore money on this project for a better cooler.

Using this for web browsing and maybe some light gaming? That 3.6 should do you just fine.

I love seeing 775s being given new life. My e8400 got me into overclocking and the Q9550 still serves me well.

Good on you!

Thats pretty high temp, my old qx6800 was idling at 68°C when I brought it out of retirement for my server (doesnt help that it 130w tdp either)
The q6600 that is now running is no better at 50°C, I am going to try an e7600 seeing as Im running 32bit os and the q6600 is being wasted (max cpu useage is 10%) and pumps out a lot of heat when idle

Well yesterday was kind of like Christmas 9 years later. I found a brand new Thermalright Ultima 90 in my basement that I forgot that I had. New and unused. I'd like to try this out. However I have read some reviews that the mounting bracket allows the cooler to turn and rotate slightly even after fully secured. Any thoughts?

What style of mounting braket does it use?

If its like the thermalright hr01 or the Tt big typhoon then the movement is minimal and that once the paste cures it will be stuck fast

It is very similar to those brackets. I just finished installing the Ultima and once fully secured the heatsink didn't move at all. Not sure what these reviews were talking about. Only downside was it took me about 2 hours start to finish because I had to redo wall my wiring to accommodate the bigger heatsink. I'll tell you what though it was well worth it. Idle temps are 33 32 30 32 a full 10c cooler. And under load temps are almost 30c cooler! So far 5mins into Prime small FFTs my load temps are in the low 50s.

Thats great news, I would have tried to keep the quad under 85°C thats when the qx6800 throttles, I know this from a failed aio attempt when they first came out

Yeah I feel better now that the temps are way lower. I'd like to try to get 3.8-4ghz out of this setup now. I used to have a Q9550 and I got it stable at 450x8.5. But I didn't save those settings.

I just did a real quick test for 3.8ghz (425 x 9) but failed prime almost instantly. It's late so I'll have to try again later.
