Looking for a Linux - Page 5

I really don't have 16GB to spare for a PF. I deleted my system-allocated (massive) PF eons ago and set a custom size with min/max values of 16MB/2GB and since then the size of the new PF has *never* grown past 16MB, even though the total RAM is 8GB and I run VMs and games like Cities: Skyline. I guess it's less sensitive than default Linux swappiness because I run up into 70%+ RAM usage often and the PF just stays at 16MB. Never had an issue with this although the minimum allowed PF size is 16MB and disabling it completely caused random lock-ups. I think the requirement might have to do with the commit charge limit, it comes up short without that 16MB PF.

Documentation is kind of sparse but that's just par for the course with proprietary software.

Would be interesting to see how games would perform if swap is used on a GPU instead.

that's pretty cool, would work nicely on one of those monster Titan cards with boatloads of VRAM. Intel's new "Optane" memory looks good for swap/caching sort of stuff too, haven't looked into it much yet but if it comes at a nice price it'd be worth it

Using Lubuntu 16.10
I wanted to use the manjaro-kde-17.0-stable-x86_64 but that is too big for my USB ...
Would be nice if i could somehow format my other SSD and simply copy it and do something else ,not sure what ,would be nice if someone could tell me

since i am without sound at this moment and I cannot find AMD drivers for this OS.

Without any other info I can only guess that the iso didn't properly install to the usb.

For future reference, if you want to try a different desktop environment ( Gnome, KDE, xfce) you don't have to reinstall the whole OS. Install the new desktop environment, logout, then pick the new DE at the login screen... and if you like it, remove the old one. The "Editions" are only what is installed by default, you're not limited to only using the default DE.

Personally I don't like Manjaro much, I much prefer Xubuntu as it's Ubuntu but without the spyware.

I for one love Manjaro! But that's the beauty of Linux, everyone gets to find what they love! thumb.gif

OP, what did you use to install the iso to the USB drive? Did you make the USB live CD from Windows (I would recommend using Rufus) or did you do it from within another Linux distro?

I run Debian SID, Funtoo Linux, Arch Linux on a bunch of computers/laptops/NUC:s around the house, and dualboot on my main computer with Win10 and Ubuntu Gnome currently. Any distro/flavor will do the same stuff basically. Take the one you prefer. For the simplest dual boot conf i think clamares- or about any graphical installer will do the trick smoothly. Just disable the fast start in win/UEFI

Running Win7 on a 240GB SSD (the games take a lot space) and Ubuntu Studio and Mint 18.1 on a 120GB SSD.
In BIOS/UEFI u decide which Disk to be the default boot disk.

With F12-key (Gigabyte) at boot flash opens up the Boot menu (different motherboards/computer makers have different keys or key-combinations for the boot-menu).

Wanted Mint 18.1 to be the main OS.
When installing win7 I had the "Linux disk" unconnected. Then went ahead and installed Ubuntu Studio making certain that the Boot-disk (place for GRUB) was the SDA.
After Ubuntu Studio I installed Linux Mint 18.1, that way Mint became the default OS to boot.

Have been playing a lot on that computer " mostly South Park the stick of truth" in Win7 so changed the Win7 disk as the #1 Boot disk.
Again F12 at boot flash can I select the Linux disk to boot, or actually Grub boot, the Grub gives a menu where I can choose either Linux Mint (default, that starts after a few seconds) or Ubuntu Studio.

Using Linux Mint for home office and online banking, Ubuntu Studio for creation fun, and Win7 for gaming fun.
Settled with 2 Linux distro's but I think Grub will be able to handle many more OS'es to boot.
