RAID card for FreeNAS

Thread Starter
I have an old machine with 8 SATA ports, using 7 for storage and 1 for OS SSD. I need to add an 8th drive for an 8-drive RAID6 NAS setup. Can anyone recommend a recently built RAID card that would work right off the bat with the latest FreeNAS build?

You cannot use a RAID card with FreeNAS unless it supports JBOD mode. What you want is an HBA. The one best I have found so far is this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-IT-Mode-Genuine-LSI-9211-8i-SAS-SATA-8-port-PCI-E-Card-Bulk-pack-US-Seller-/291641245650?hash=item43e72c3fd2:g:hboAAOSwOgdYxx1I
9211-8i

Has the LSI2008 controller on it so it supports 3TB+ drives. Also, it is flashed with IT firmware already so it will act as a simple HBA and work with freenas.

You may have to flash it to another version of the firmware to match the drive version that the FreeNAS uses but otherwise it will work fine even with the latest corral build. No complaints so far and it has been in use for about 7 months now with 24/7 use.

I am running in my office a 2 32TB RAIDs in a ZPool. Both are setup using ZRAID 2. All drives are in 2 4U SAS chassis. Works like a charm.

However, I have a slightly different version of the card that uses external sas connections to run them in a half rack. Different model but same card.

Edit: If you got a recently built card for what you are looking for, you will be easily paying 300-400 bucks for it. Go with one of these and you will be happy. Newer stuff has compatibility issues.

Edit 2: Make sure you get some SAS to SATA breakout cables. You can run up to 8 drives off this card no issues.
