[Build Log] - Nimitz

Hello Everyone!

This is going to be my first build log, but my 3rd full custom build for myself. So any advice or constructive criticism on the blog or the build is welcomed.

I have been building for 7 years now and have become an enthusiast in that time. My last build consisted of a Corsair 900D case, with an EVGA Z77 FTW mobo, an Intel i7-3770k, 16GBs of Corsair Vengeance, a 512GB Samsung 850 Pro SSD, and started out with a Corsair HX1000w PSU and two EVGA 680 FTW cards in SLI. I also had a custom water loop for the CPU. Over its life of the last 5 years I found two more 680 FTW cards for 4-way SLI, added all four to the water loop and upgraded to a Corsair AX1500i PSU. I had been doing Nvidia Surround before recently getting an ASUS ROG PG348Q ultrawide. But it's time for an upgrade as I would like to get a VR headset and dive into that realm of gaming.

Below are the parts I have purchased and plan to purchase for this build:

Case: Caselabs SMA8 (gunmetal)
CPU: Intel i7-7700k
Mobo: Asrock Z270 Supercarrier
RAM: 16GBs GSkill Trident Z RGB @ 3866MHz
SSD: 2 x 250GB Samsung 960 EVO NVMe in RAID 0 (OS and main apps)
512GB Samsung 850 Pro (reuse from old rig for storage)
GPU: 2 x EVGA GTX 1080 ti FTW3
PSU: Corsair AX1500i (reuse from my old build. I know it's overkill)
Cooling: Custom loop with 2 x XSPC 480mm rads and all EK blocks, fittings, pumps, resevoirs and hard tubing.

The case, cpu, mobo, ram, and SSD's are all set up and ready to go.

I have some parts from Caselabs on order. I was hoping to pre-order the GPU's yesterday, but as soon as I got them in the cart they were sold out.

I'm planning to do custom sleeved cables as well. Not sure if I will do them myself or buy them pre-made. I've sleeved an old PSU once and it was really time consuming. Those of you who have made your own and/or bought pre-made ones, what are your thoughts on this?

Below are some pics of my progress so far. I have a Cryorig M9 Mini installed for the time being. I haven't taken any pics with the system on, but will get some up later as well.

Thanks for reading and enjoy!

SMA8 in pieces.

Haven't taken the protective sheet off the window yet.
Just built my dad a new computer as well. Threw his m-itx board in the SMA8 for ****s and gigs.
Asrock Z270 Supercarrier.
The removable motherboard tray is extremely handy!
250GB Samsung 960 EVO's in a glorious NVMe RAID 0.
Intel i7-7700k. Sorry for potato quality.
Cryorig M9 mini until I get my EK parts in.
GSkill Trident Z RGB 3866.

I will get pics of it all turned on as well as some SSD speed benchmarks. NVMe RAID 0 is crazy fast!

yo subbed! glad you went with that motherboard! to me, it's the most badass looking mobo out there. not to mention the absurd amount of features in it!

Glad to hear, RXWX! I agree with you there. It's not loaded with too much gaudy plastic like a lot of the Asus models, and looks classy. It's got a ton features! The only one that doesn't really make sense to me is the 5GB NIC. I have done a bit of research and there doesn't seem to be any other 5GB NICs or switches out there. They should have just gone with 10GB if there were going to go through the trouble.

I ran an AS SSD bench on the RAID 0 NVMe's to compare to my current build's 512GB 850 Pro. Just ridiculous sequential r/w speeds!

2 x 250GB 960 EVO M.2 NVMe

512GB 850 Pro SATA

Quick update!

I've decided on a name... Nimitz. The USS Nimitz is currently the oldest active aircraft carrier for the US and is the lead ship in it's class. With the build being based around a gunmetal grey Caselabs SMA8 and an ASRock Z270 Supercarrier I find Nimitz to be a fitting and unique name.

Most of the EK parts have been ordered. Everything except GPU blocks and some right angle rotary fittings that Performance-PCs didn't have. I will get the blocks ordered when available and will probably order the right angle fittings right from EK.

Also, just an FYI, Performance-PCs is having an Easter sale which is Spend $50 and get 8% off or spend $250 and get 10% off. They also have free shipping on EK parts.

**Please note that my build is not sponsored by anyone. I just like to share good deals as I find them.**

I decided to pull my 680's out of my current build and popped two of them into my new one so I can start using it and getting Windows set the way I want.

Hello OCers!

I started cleaning up my fans and seeing how they look in the SMA8. I just tried the blue and white rings that came with the fans so far. Not going to do red build as my last one was red and black. I'm considering painting them but not sure what color yet. If you have suggestions let me know.

My EK parts have arrived!

EK-Supremacy EVO Elite CPU Block
EK-RES X3 250 Reservoir x 2
EK-XTOP Revo D5 pump x 2
EK-UNI Pump Bracket x 2
EK-HD 12/16mm Tubing
EK-DuraClear Tubing (for the basement tubing)
Lots of Black Nickel fittings!

I will get some more product images once I start working on the loop. Still waiting on some parts from Caselabs as well as the GPU's and GPU blocks.
