They probably meant the free upgrade from before Windows 10 (1607). That was the Windows 10 version that would accept a Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 Key which gave you a "free" upgrade to Windows 10.

Since we are now on Windows 10 (1703) you'll now need a Windows 10 key if yo plan to clean install.

Or you can go the long route I guess. Install 1607 using a Windows 7 or 8.1 PK and then then upgrade to 1703.

With the windows 10 free upgrade, I'll be getting home premium, isnce I got windows 7 home premium, correct? Asuming the upgrade thing still works.
However as I asked before, I need confirmation on this next thing:
Is it true that to 100% disable windows update / driver update in windows 10, you need Pro and not Home?

Yes Win 7 Home Premium upgrades to 10 Home.

I can confirm that the latest CU build ISO will not activate with a windows 7 key. It accepts the key during installation, but fails to activate. The assistive technologies upgrade method still works if you install 7 first, upgrade, then you can clean install Windows 10 to your heart's content.

If there's a way to control drivers in Home, it will be via regedit, and this is unreliable as registry edits get reset by subsequent build updates. Between AU and CU they added an exclude driver checkbox which would have been a great help to home users, but they removed the setting again before the final release, so screw you guys I guess. The only reliable method of managing updates and/or drivers is via the group policy editor, and only Pro has that.

The only good news is that they seem to have fixed the group policy for excluding drivers in Pro, which makes Pro user's lives a lot easier (used to have to disable all automatic updates and constantly monitor WU and block drivers with WU Show/Hide tool because half of the drivers still came through).

I suggest you get a pro license of 7, 8.1 or 10.

EDIT: Tenforums has methods for disabling driver updates via registry edits, but like I said, I wouldn't consider such fixes very dependable:

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/48277-enable-disable-driver-updates-windows-update-windows-10-a.html

EDIT2: Completely disabling automatic drivers in Windows 10 Pro should now be as easy as:

1) System Properties -> Hardware tab -> Set Device Installation Settings to No (this probably does nothing).

2) gpedit.msc: Local Computer Policy/Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update/Do not include drivers with Windows Update: Enabled

3) gpedit.msc: Local Computer Policy/Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Device Installation/Specify search order for device driver source locations: Enabled, Do not search Windows Update

No drivers will be downloaded either on connection of a device, or by Windows Update.

Additionally, if you want disable automatic installation of the remaining Windows updates:

gpedit.msc: Local Computer Policy/Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Update/Configure Automatic Updates: Enabled, Notify for download and notify for install.

WU will find updates, but won't download them until you tell it to.

I'll grap windows 10 pro, just to get that extra freedom.

Once windows has been installed, is there anything usefull that needs to be disabled and how?
I know about OneDrivre

-- Disable OneDrive

-- Disable Background Intelligent Transfer Service

-- Remove preinstalled aps
https://www.howtogeek.com/224798/how-to-uninstall-windows-10s-built-in-apps-and-how-to-reinstall-them/

About your last step. I want windows to find and install drivers, upon connecting a device, such as USB units. I just dont want windows to mess around with chipset driver / lan driver / gfx driver / audio driver.

Do you still need to disable OneDrive? I noticed that it is in the add/remove programs list in Control Panel (didn't try uninstalling it because I use it). Looks like one might be able to uninstall it normally now.

The Specify search order for device driver source locations, Do not search Windows Update policy only prevents drivers from being downloaded from a remote server. It doesn't prevent Windows from using generic/default drivers that were already included with Windows, and therefore will not interfere with normal "plug and play" installation of devices.

For example, without that policy, if I connect a logitech wireless keyboard, Windows 10 will immediately install the device, but it will also download additional "logitech download manager" bloatware. With the policy enabled, the keyboard is still installed and functional, just without the bloat.

There is a policy to prevent Windows from using even it's locally stored default drivers, but that's completely different.

This one confusses me. Having it disabled, will make windows not install USB device drivers upon connecting an usb unit? And I cannot search for new windows updates manually if I wanted to?

This one here, is just to prevent windows 10 pro from downloading any updates on its own, right?

Like the image you posted below. Type gpedit.msc into search, then follow the policy path I specified and configure the policy as I specified. if it's still not clear I could make step-by-step instructions with pictures.

Yes, those are the types of drivers that usually appear in WU.

I think you probably can still manually search the server for drivers (via device manager), but I haven't tried it. Ideally you'd go to the vendor's site to download the latest drivers, as the ones Microsoft supply are usually outdated.

No, you have to do both to stop Windows from downloading any drivers on it's own.

There are two types of automatic driver download (and here "driver" can include device vendor bloatware such as the aforementioned Logitech Download Manager or Razer Synapse):

A) The type that happens immediately the first time you attach a device (this is usually only for peripheral devices like mice).
B) The type that get installed by Windows Update alongside regular Windows updates.

If you only enable Do not include drivers with Windows Update, then type A drivers will still get downloaded when you attach new devices, and if you only enable Specify search order for device driver source locations, then type A drivers will not get installed immediately, but instead they will become type B drivers (ie. appear in the Windows update list and get installed automatically that way).

So you need to enable both policies if you want to stop Windows from downloading any drivers on it's own

this is so confussing for me. Sorry.

So I enable both options, and windows will not do anything with either drivers or updates on its own, correct?
So what happens when I connect my keyboard / mouse / external ssd, which all are USB devices?

My keyboard + mouse does not require any drivers (saitek eclipse 2 + logitech mx510), but I would still need windows to recognise'em and install the USB driver for'em.

My keyboard + mouse does not require any drivers (saitek eclipse 2 + logitech mx510), but I would still need windows to install the USB driver for'em.

If you enable both the Do not include drivers with Windows Update and Specify search order for device driver source locations options, Windows will not download drivers. It will continue to automatically download and install non-driver Windows updates.

When you connect a USB peripheral device like the ones you mentioned, it will use the default drivers that are already included with Windows and the devices will work fine in 99.99% of cases.

There are some features that you might not get with the default Windows drivers, in which case you just go to the manufacturer's site and download the drivers/software from there, which is preferable to letting Windows download them anyway. In very rare cases Windows might not have any default drivers for a device, and again, you should get them straight from the manufacturer's site. I've seen Windows download incorrect and outdated drivers for devices in the past, so you're always better off finding and installing device drivers manually if they're needed.
