Something else you need to consider with AMD is they don't swap socket types every 2 CPU gens, making you buy a new motherboard for a CPU upgrade, like Intel does. If you invest in a solid AM4 socket motherboard right now, you should be able to drop a new CPU in it 4 years later, which means you don't have to buy a new motherboard, and you don't need to buy a new OS after buying a new motherboard.

I don't think AMD boards are getting DDR5 memory in the next 4 years, nor are you going to require a socket better than PCI-E 3.0x16 for a GPU upgrade, 4 years from now. So right now, AMD is more future proof.

Also, I dunno what it is about these new Intel Chips, but they run REALLY hot. I'm getting 10-15C hotter temps under load than my Sandy Bridge I5 got with the same cooler, and I had to upgrade to a freaking H80i, and this I5 6600k still runs hotter on an H80i than an I5 2500k does on a 212+ evo, wow!? I'm still getting 60c temps during gaming on an H80i cooler. My old I5 2500k never got much higher than mid 50s in gaming. I'm not buying any more Intel chips until they start putting non-junk thermal compound under the lids again.

The 1800x is a better buy than spending $1000 for one of Intel's 8c/16t models. The Intel CPU isn't even 10% better, and it's more than twice as much.

Not to mention the ridiculous value of the 1700... but for some reason people just can't let AMD have a win... so it is what it is.

Because of SMT.

100% load on all physical cores, will show up as 50% total CPU usage on Ryzen. That's why it has much lower CPU usage than i5.

Same thing happends on Intel CPU's with HT.

$219 vs $310 respectively.

Only 6% lower ipc on Ryzen, and can be overclocked to 4ghz if u can.

Let alone ryzen 1400's $169 asking price for 4c/8t.

Price/performance is firmly in favor of Ryzen, extra saved money for better GPU/bigger SSD.

So much common sense.

So what if one already has bigger/better gpu? cos I'm in dilemma b/n 1600x and 6700k, microcenter has good prices on the 6700k too
6700k is better in Pcars and 1600x is either equal or better in Crysis 3
prolly wait for that 6 core i5 coffee lake

What I will never understand is why people compare processors on games that they will never play.

When I look at benchmark charts to justify an upgrade I look at Fallout 4 and GTA V. It's pointless to look at BF, Mafia, PCars or whatever because I am never going to play those games.

Ask yourself - what is the target usage? What are you likely to do with it? Then assess one or the other.

Where as I wonder why people look at games to decide which cpu to buy lol.

Flops/Ops work in my favor.

Because if performance is decent or even great in all current games, chance is that upcoming games will have good performance too.

Pretty much this. Consistent performance is the goal of testing across many games. If any show an unsolvable performance problem, then its more likely that the same issue could come up in a future game.
