Upgrade Time!

Thread Starter
Hey all! It's finally time to upgrade my old PC...built it for gaming/Photoshop years ago, and while the later still works fine, I'm aged out of a lot of newer games I'd like to play. The case, SD, Hard Drives and probably the RAM are all okay, but I'd love recommendations on CPU, GPU and Motherboard upgrades. Looking to keep it around/under $350 if possible - I don't really need state of the art/highest settings. As long as I can play games like the past couple Assassins Creeds, Just Cause 3, Witcher 3 and eventually the new Mass Effect I'll be happy. I'm also considering just getting an Xbox One, so if it looks like that's a better deal I'm down for that too. Would love some input! Thanks!

All the new cpus and mobos are only going to work with DDR4 memory so you'll either have to get an older/used DDR3 mobo, or upgrade your ram as well. If you are just concerned with gaming, you couldn't just buy a new gpu like a GTX 1070.

Get an ASUS 970 Gaming Aura for $100 or less and an 8320 for about $100 and run it a 4.5 GHz with a decent cpu cooler. The gpu I am not up on. You could recycle most of your other stuff.

Shoot, I hadn't really considered the DDR3/DDR4 problem...I don't keep up on parts like I used to!

For $350 you could swing the board I mentioned, which is a very good board for the money, the 8320 has eight cores and will overclock real well. That leaves you $150 for a nice gpu. You do have that SSD for a boot drive correct?

Yeah, - I actually have a 240GB SSD for boot, plus 2 ITB drives for storage, so I don't need to worry about those.

I rather spend money on a pc than a console. Way more versatile.

In general I'd agree - the only reason I bring it up is because there are frequent deals for XBox One for $200, so part of me is tempted to just get that and save the money. So much of my PC is 6 years or so old at this point that its probably best long-term to replace!
