PLEX Server build opinion

Thread Starter
Been using my main PC as a plex server for years now and have been thinking on building a small dedicated plex server pc, i'm kinda new on servers so this is what i think should be okay for the build:

CPU: AMD A6-3500 (FM1, 3x core, 65w, 2.1GHz)
Mothrboard: HP AAHD3-HB (FM1, MicroATX, OEM motherboard)
PSU: DC 12V 150W Pico PSU (150w, Pico PSU) - this one
Cooler: AMD FM1 Stock Cooler
RAM: Samsung 4Gb DDR3
HDD: 1x 90Gb SSD, 1x 2Tb HDD

I'll be doing 1080p streaming and encoding, what do you think? redface.gif

Looks good!

But are you sure that PSU will be able to handle it? I mean It probably could but wow really cutting it close there.

65w cpu + motherboard lets say thats 100
50 watts give or take for cooler/fans/ram/hdds
It'll probably work and I'm really curious/hoping it does! That is a really interesting PSU. Hella sketchy imo, but I've seen worser things smile.gif
DC Power should be fine for that wattage anyhow.

Thanks i did some research and it seems 250w would be a better choice, which is the route i´ll take =)

I agree completely, 150w is really cutting it close you always want some headroom so your PSU isn't "maxing" out its capacity constantly.

250w is ample power!

Just remember if your going to be running the ZFS RAID type it's recommended to have ECC RAM with Plex server. Not 100% needed though.

That looks like it would work, also, you can find ES xeons on the cheap. I got my 12c/24 thread xeon v3 for like $150. Perfect for the mini itx x99 board : P

Saw a few ones 2630l at $120 but it's way beyond my budget (which is aprox. $100-$130 for the whole system), i don't want to spend too much on it since it's going stream only to one 1080p screen (through Roku Stick) a few times a day or even a week, just to take off some strees fomr my main pc redface.gif

As long as you are not transcoding the CPU won't be taxed but the moment you need go from the original stream to a lower quality (1080 to 720p or 720 to 480p) the CPU will get taxed heavily. The A6-3500 is a nice chip but unless you are certain only one or two people are going to access the server and everyone will stream the original quality that CPU will in no way be enough. The Phenom II in my server is much better than that and even my CPU sometimes has problems when my Plex server needs to transcode more than two streams.

Ideally you need something very powerful with lots of cores like this 1090T:

http://www.overclock.net/t/986327/ok-so-who-needs-a-30tb-server/460_20

You should definitely look at this thread as it is a great resource with lots of wonderful information. In fact I consider it the OCN Plex server thread.
