Best upcoming option to upgrade from 4790k

Hi,

I am right now pleased with my 4.9Ghz 4790k. However I want to upgrade. At the end of 2017 or at the beginning of 2018 at latest.

Now I want to skip Kaby Lake as performance difference is "meh" at best in gaming.

However there are some incoming options that I would like to consider and ask about your opinion. Please mind I ONLY game at my PC, sometimes stream.

Options:
1. HEDT platform - Kaby Lake X 7740k and Sky lake X lineup build. This is new socket and new series of CPUs. This seems nice, but I am afraid I won't be using the full potential of this platform. I don't SLI and I only game.
2. Coffe Lake. 1151 socket, 6-core enthusiast CPU sounds great. However it will use same socket as Kaby Lake, therefore I am afraid MOBO can become obsolate in 2018, since Intel change sockets and platforms so fast....
3. Cannon lake. 2018. 10mm However I hear that is is only for low-power platforms, not for Enthusiast desktop.

Please let me know what would you do in my place if you wanted to upgrade.

Thank you very much in advance for all opinions!

If it was me and I was still happy with the performance of my current chip I would continue waiting until I either felt that my pc was getting slow even after a fresh install of windows, or found a game that is able to bottleneck one component or another. Just upgrading to have a newer platform without a specific reason to me is just throwing money away.
Still running a 4770k myself with a custom loop with a modest oc of 4.2 and very happy with it.

For us folks with "good" OC'ing Haswell CPU's Kaby Lake is a skip IMHO like you stated. My next CPU/build will be the best 6 or 8 core CPU available for gaming. This will be my last quad core desktop. All I do with my desktop anymore is game. I have a high-end Dell notebook and a MacBook for work. I'm especially interested in whatever the 6900K successor is and the pricing when it hits. Good news for me: Microcenter is ~75 miles away. biggrin.gif

Then I guess Coffe Lake is the valid option in your and my case. 6-Core Enthusiast chip is to be rumored as flagship for Coffe lineup.
