I'm going to insulate the area around the shunt, so not worried here. But you can wait from reports from other people on whether it trickles down or not, before you do the mod.

Didn't seem to hurt the 7700k which is probably the best gaming cpu on the market right now? What would you recommend?

Get the 7700K. Based on what we know from the leaks, 7740K is the same CPU, with 100Mhz clock bump & more expensive due to HEDT platform. Also forgot to add, apparently 7740K will have the same number of PCie lanes as 7700K. rolleyes.gif

I figured what's the point of getting a Xp now when the only reason I'm not doing 1080Ti SLI is because my cpu would become an eventual bottleneck.

Its hard to resist but if I had a XP or 1080Ti already I wouldn't upgrade to a Xp.

This is why I just sold one of my 1080Tis and am thinking of selling the other and moving to single Titan Xp. The two cards are simply too fast in SLI at my resolution (1440p) and my CPU. I have to bump everything up to 4k resolution or higher to get usage to even out at 99%. I am in hold mode with the top end ASUS 4k monitor not hitting until Q3 at the earliest, so yeah...I completely get where you are coming from. Ready to move to X299.

@Jpmboy What you think?

NVM. You want the Silver. Resistance too high on the others. doh.gif
... who knows. nickel may be the correct mod. gotta try.

See below....

You want the BOTTOM one.

The one with part number: 842AR-P

This is thee one with lower resistance - the other has 0.2 ohm / cm too high for us.

we want...this one

I think the acrylic one is harder to remove/restore back to OEM?

Absolutely this if you are at 1440p/144/165 Single Xp is the way to go, until 4k/144 that is.

Thread Starter
3440x1440p @ 100hz (X34) still requires SLI to power through the more demanding games (Witcher 3, RoTR, ME: A, etc) with zero graphical compromises, so it has been worth it for me.

If there were a single card that could drive 95%+ games at this res. at this fps I would never get SLI again (but by that time, we'll have 4K + 144rhz and that will require SLI as well, lol....the cycle will never stop).

This is only an expensive hobby if you let it be but if you're living within your means then really it's not difficult to afford the Titan X variant of every generation. It's all about personal lifestyle and budgetary choices... thumb.gif

it actually has more lanes and a 20% bump in power so it will have a higher OC ceiling. It has enough lanes to do x16 x16 SLI and still have lanes for nvme. If it's delidded it'd hit 5.5Ghz+. Also there would be an upgrade path on that board. Don't bury it just yet. It'll smoke a 7700k, wait and see.

If money were no object than I'd look hard at Skylake-X first perhaps, but for pure gaming it'll be 7740k/7700k/5775c as the best gaming cpu on the planet.

This is exactly why I'm waiting. 7700K is the last chip on its current board. 7740k will be just the start for the X299. I'm curious just how much more expensive the X299 boards will be. I'd hate to wait 3 month's to build my next PC only to be blown away by the price's when I could have built a 7700 system in April.

Source on more lanes, because the leaks says otherwise

Factory power limit on unlocked CPUs means jack. I thought this was common knownledge. rolleyes.gif

Upgrade path is the only valid point you made.
