Its a pretty dang solid deal if you ask me.

The only laptop I would consider is the alienware 15. You would have to get the i5 and the 1060 so it would have lower specs, but you can get it with a 99 watt hour battery which makes it very capable as an actual portable computer.

For 1850, you can get the alienware 15 with the full i7 7700hq and a 1070. If you were to get like a 15% off cupon or something like that, it would bring it down to 1600 ish which is in spitting distance of your max budget.

It's a good buy. I spent slightly less on a refurb alienware, with smaller ssd, and 8GB mem. If you are planning on using it for a gaming rig, I strongly suggest getting the unlocked 6820hk or 7820hk. Easily overclocked to 4+Ghz, and a 40% overclock may come in handy for future game releases. You can find one in the unit you described for slightly more money, and it's a wise investment.

Specs wise the laptop is perfect but as it will be used as a travelling laptop, the weight needs to be less (at most 5 pounds is best).

I would recommend you to have a look at this laptop - MSI VR Ready GS63VR Stealth Pro-034

Hardware Specifications -

15.6" Full HD Non Reflection 1920x1080
Intel Core i7-6700HQ Quad Core Processor (2.6-3.5GHz)
NVIDIA's Latest GeForce GTX 1060 6G GDDR5
16GB (8GB x2) DDR4 2400MHz RAM
Hard Drive: 256GB M.2 SATA SSD + 1TB (5400rpm)
Weight: 3.96lbs

Special features: VR READY | Steel Series Full-Color Backlight Keyboard w/ Anti-Ghost Key + Silver Lining | Killer Gaming Network E2400 | Thunderbolt 3 | Slim and Light Design | Metal Build

According to me this would be the best gaming laptop for travel in $1500 price range.

For other options, you can look at this list - Top 10 Best Gaming Laptops Under $1500 (this will get most of your questions answered and they have pretty decent laptops listed over there). Also, checkout laptop mag's guide on gaming laptops. They always have the top rated laptops listed on their website with comprehensive review of each model.

Hi as you will be using your laptop while traveling, weight is also the thing to consider I guess?
I would recommend you to go with this MSI laptop instead (it's under $1500) - MSI VR Ready GS63VR Stealth Pro-034. Search on Amazon you'll find it.

Weight isn't a concern really.

Hower I bought an Acer Predator 17 at microcenter with a 6700HQ and a 1060 w/(75hz Gsync display) . 1199

However... The screen is absolutely awful

The ghosting is unreal. and overall is just an unpleasant experience.

Are there any laptops with actual quality, near desktop class, displays ?

What do you mean by desktop class? IPS/TN/VA? Or Resolution? Your statement isn't that descriptive, sorry.

Your laptop actually looks pretty beefy. Probably a bit faster than my desktop in gaming i'd wager. Nice system.
