XFX RX480 GTR Black Ed. 8GB strange VRAM usage

Hi,

I've noticed in GTA 5, Shadow of Mordor and a couple of other games that my vram usage would climb to 4000+MB and after a few minutes drop down as low as 7 - 250mb and stay there. The problem doesn't seem to have any impact on the games though, at least non that I can tell.

I found this out after installing MSI Afterburner to check my temps in game after setting a custom fan curve.
Both Afterburner and GPU-Z show the same results.
So is there something wrong with my GPU and should I RMA it back to newegg?

I would have thought the memory usage would stay consistent.

Thanks

No memory usage is not consistent. In AB I get the same thing says it used more then 4GB of VRAM when I only have 4GB VRAM. Also the dips depend on what is happening in the game.

Thanks for the reply, but I still don't get why both AB and GPU-Z are telling me that my vram is basically almost empty. I mean how can a game even run on 12mb of cached vram?
Guess I just don't understand how this works. Someone care to explain?

4080mb vram being used

3mb vram being used

I still think there's something wrong with this card.

Thanks

I did that. Reinstalled 4 different driver versions (17.4.1, 17.3.3, 17.3.2 and 17.2.1) and did the DDU safe mode thing for each one and each driver still gave the same results with vram useage.

I sent the 480 back today, we'll see how well the replacement works. I should get it in a week or so.

Well isn't this interesting.
Just played an hour or so of GTA5 with my Sapphire HD7850 2GB and the VRAM usage according to AB never dropped below 1700mb, whereas the 480 I just returned would drop to 3mb after a few minutes.
