I7 4790K or i7 3930K?

Thread Starter
I'm in the market for a new processor since i bought a 1080 recently and i want to minimize any bottlenecks till i can save up for a 7700K. But until then i have around $450-$480 for a CPU and MoBo and i been eyeing a used 3930K on ebay for about 120 and a brand new sabertooth x79 for 360. Or i can get a 4790K on ebay or possibly on here for around 240 and an ASRock Z97 Extreme6 for 160. What would be better for games like rise of the tomb raider, Ark survival, DOOM 2016, BF4 and some older titles like crysis 2 and 3 and just the overall better setup for me.

If you could haggle on the board a little more, I'd definitely consider the X79 setup. You might not have to upgrade for a decent while longer than what you'd have done, had you gone with the Z97. Many of the games coming out now require higher number of cores and 6 cores will trump 4 in apps that can utilize them even if you had a higher clocking models. Besides, the SBE / IBE used to clock decent ~4.5Ghz at which point, they're a few FPS away from even the 7700K in single threaded apps whilst dominating in multi threaded workloads. Try to find a used X79 board for cheaper.

it's an eBay listing so it's set in stone prices unfortunately. There are a few used board for cheaper but used boards are pretty sketchy on ebay. But you make a good point. I'll go for the 3930K setup i may be able to push it to a 4930K if i can find a well priced X79 board.

Definitely go with the X79.

You could get a I7 5820k and an X99 mobo for around the same price and have support for nvme/ddr4 things like that. i7 5820k~$300.00 x99 mobo ~ $140.00. Just a thought.

problem is that would be useless without getting DDR4 to go with it thats another 105 minimum i simply cant afford that right now. And i hate to say it but a 140 dollar X99 board will be junk it wont last a year i bet money on it. Oh and a 5820K is a 400 dollar CPU not 300.

Honestly, if you're just gaming, the 4790k is the way to go. However, it says you've already got an i7 4790k in your sig rig. Is that correct?

I personally don't think it's a good idea to invest on SB-E in this day and age, even less at $360 for a motherboard, that price is just beyond ludicrous.
