Eh, I really love the iMac's with the 5K display. Its the one AIO I'd ever consider buying just for the sheer cool factor which, let's face it, is what Apple is all about.

While at the time the price might have been 'acceptable', it definitely is not now.
Did you check the build examples I posted?

Have you checked ECC prices lately? Seems like they still carry a 150% premium. Cheapest 16GB DDR3 is $80, ECC $126 on PCPartPicker. DDR4 for $87, $189 for ECC (217% premium)...

Workstation GPUs? The r9 285/380 are also Tonga Pro, albeit with 4GB instead of 8GB... a r9 380 is available for $210 on PCPartPicker, the W7100 is $638 (not even ECC - w8100 is $920)...

A more modern example would be the RX 470/480 8GB vs WX 5100/7100 at $200/250 vs $365/$625 (to be sure, the 5100 is only a 1792:112:32 card vs the 470 at 2048:128:32, 7100 is 2304:128:32 vs 2304:144:32 for the 480).

By your logic, is everyone who's buying ECC or workstation GPUs getting duped?

Granted this is only after a few minutes, I could do better given time:
Quote:
Cheapest 16GB ECC DDR3 is $80

$36 new free shipping

Quote:
W7100 is $638

$449 new $8.70 shipping

RX 470/480 8GB vs WX 5100/7100 at $200/250 vs $365/$625

You're right here, at least for now, given that RX 470/480 8GB and WX 5100/7100 are only a year old. Used is another story. In general, its not a good idea to limit yourself to one price aggregate if the goal is to save money.

that's registered DIMMs you need to get the entire amount of ram youre wanting to have vs just upgrading existing. Registered and Unbuffered DIMMs will not work together and the Mac Pro comes with Unbuffered DIMMs so the upgrade to ram assuming going for 32gb or so is more like 50-100$+ depending on the density for Registered and same for the Unbuffered DIMMs so your 36$ memory upgrade is wrong.

I'm aware. The number given was arbitrary hence the offer linked.
