[droidreport] AMD Ryzen 16-Core CPU Expected To Dominate Intel In Terms of Price, Power - Page 2

ahhh so no variants of those then.......frown.gif

Might be a challenge trying to cool the 16 core when overclocked. Maybe the large surface area will help with heat dissipation a bit, but trying to cool basically two 1700s at around 1.35v will probably not be possible without going custom. The VRMs will also have their work cut out for them to because this will be a power hungry beast.

But on the bright side, if they're using two R7 cpus with infinity fabric interposed between all of the cores, then we can expect clockspeeds similar to the R7 series. The clockspeeds aren't that good when comared to other higher clocked processors, but in the HEDT and server world, having 16 cores shipped with a factory 3.1GHz baseclock (rumored) is unheard of. It looks like the Zen architecture tops out at around 3.8-4.0GHz, so hopefully we can expect those numbers with this cpu when cooled adequately.

I recall reading that the 16c version should allow for similar clock speeds and would be equivalent to having two R9 1700 CPUs, just within a single CPU and would run 180w. Just wondering if it will support dual socket motherboards.

Performance should be very close indeed. Highest clocked 16 core Intel has comes at 2.6 base / 3.6 turbo at 145 W TDP, Zen should be able to do at least 2.8 GHz at similar TDP. Only the 22/24-core models are more than a few percent faster and those cost several times more and use more power.

How hard is this to cool when overclocked? Ryzen has a tjunction of around 80c last I remember, much lower than Intel.

I hope so! And multiplier overclockable would be amazing too.

If this happens, i will upgrade, lol. i told myself I wouldn't and have absolutely no use for it. But.... i would if I could get at least 3.6-3.6ghz clocks and 32 cores.... 64 threads.

Hype train revving up again?

If it can be OCed to 4Ghz on water cooling or better, count me in. If it's closer to 3Ghz then probably not. It's a high performance part, so hopefully it's not on the low power process like the 1700-1800X series, but we shall see.

Get to the present.... This is not the old AMD which needed many cores to beat or compete with intel. THey do it today with ease while using less power.

Get out of the past.
