Samsung 960 Evo Running Slow?

I built my system about a week ago, and something just isn't right..

System Specs:
https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/v3XJ2R

(Running Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit, everything stock - No OC)

My downloads folder (about 8gb worth of files/folders) takes 20-30 seconds to load. When I click on it, it just says "Working on it...". The same thing happens when i go into my devices and printers folder. I've experienced these issues on my 3 year old ultrabook with a much slower SSD and was not expecting to see the same problems with such a premium ssd.

The read/write speeds seem okay when I benchmark, but the 4k and random reads/writes seem like they are disastrously slow. I know I installed windows in UEFI, and for the most part everything else is running smooth (although, I am getting 90C+ temps only when benchmarking with Prime95, but that's probably irrelevant).

Imgur Link to benchmarks:

Anyone have any suggestions?

Have you installed the samsung nvme driver?

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/downloads/software/Samsung_NVM_Express_Driver_22.zip

As far as the downloads folder, sometimes that can be improved by right-clicking, properties, customize, and say "Optimize this folder for": "General Items"

Okay great, I'll try the optimization method for the downloads folder. However, I see no such option for the devices and printers folder.

It looks like I have version 2.1.0.1611 of the Samsung NVM Express Driver installed. I'll try updating to version you linked to see if that makes a difference.

Updated to the new Samsung NVM Express driver and still no changes. The optimization for the downloads folder definitely helped though.

What else can I do?

Maybe try turning off network discovery?

You have to keep in mind that although that 4K seems a bit low compared to what others may be getting, it's still blazing fast. 31 MB/s is 7,750 reads/sec, which at a queue depth of 1 is 0.12 ms/read, which is definitely not "disastrously slow."

Just tried disabling network discovery - didn't make a difference..

Admittedly, I am still learning how exactly the speeds translate to in real world performance. But the concerning thing to me is the 4k Q32 T1 Read+Write speeds. Compare it to this review, for example: http://www.thessdreview.com/featured/samsung-960-evo-m-2-nvme-ssd-review-250gb1tb/3/

According to CrystalDiskMark, I am getting 110/107 MB/s respectively. For this exact drive, they are getting speeds 10x (TEN TIMES) compared to what I am getting.. From what I understand, this is the speed at which small random accessed files are read/written. Even my 3+ year old ultrabook's stock SSD has DOUBLE the 4k Q32 speeds that I am currently geting on this Samsung.

Also on that review - the 4k Write speeds are over 3x compared to what I am getting, and the 4k read is about 50% faster as well.

And these are only comparing the CrystalDiskMark results. Their AS SSD benchmark results show that their drive has nearly double my score (2070 vs 3825). Something has to be wrong here..

Hey, that's my review. Under the drive's properties/policies in devices manager did you disable buffer flushing? Power savings disabled like Intel speedstep and C1e? Those three settings disabled should help.

Awesome review!

I did a fresh install. I got much better 4k speeds on crystaldiskmark (~600mb/s). However, a day later, the speeds went back to the original speeds from the first post.

I have also tried disabling all of those settings and it made no difference whatsoever.

Still confused...

CPU C states are disabled too? What do your speeds look like now in crystal disk mark?

Just tried disabling all the various C States. Not much of a change. The only major differences are My "Seq" Read speeds went from ~1500 to 2011. Although, now my "Seq Q32T4" write speeds went from ~1500 to 1034.. I have also tried uninstalling samsung magician, and the nvme drivers. No difference whatsoever. What else is there to try?

Also, I am noticing my CPU is idling quite a bit higher when i disabled all the C states and intel speedstep. Approximately 5-7C higher. Load seems to be the same. I guess that's to be expected though.

I am not sure what to do with this ssd. It's too late to return it. Could it be possible that I just got stuck with a slow/defective unit?
