Question regarding speaker designation in a Home theater.

Thread Starter
So I am trying to sell some speakers on craigslist and someone has been messaging me stating that my ad is misleading and I just want more feedback to be sure on the subject.

So my ad title on craigslist states that I am selling a 9.2 speaker setup.
The reason I say 9.2 is because there are 4 surround bookshelves, center channel, and two towers that have top firing Dolby Atmos speakers that require their own channels. Also each tower has a powered 12" subwoofer, and the center channel has an 8" powered subwoofer. so in my eye's it could technically be a 9.3 but I just put it at 9.2 because I've never heard of a 9.3 receiver.

The person messaging me say's that it should be specified as a 7.0.2 because the powered subwoofers don't count as a subwoofer channel and the Atmos top firing channels on the towers count as the third number in 7.0.2

I know Atmos is still fairly new so I do not know the exact designation for those speakers.

So my question is, is he right, am I right; or are we both wrong?

No, just because some speakers have subwoofers does not make them two speakers.

Okay so what about the Atmos speakers, would they be considered in the first number or this new this number that the guy mentioned?
9.0 or 7.0.2?

Speakers first number, subwoofers second number. So 5 speakers and two subwoofers would be 5.2 surround. A subwoofer is strictly plugged in the receiver/amp as a subwoofer.

However, I see that the subwoofer component of the Atmos speakers, and correct me if I'm wrong, plugs into the receiver separately, so two of those speakers would be 2.2, so you are right since they plug into the receiver separately.

Atoms is actually considered a third number.

so 7.0.2 is what he really has.

But Atmos is loose term.

As you could consider front high as part of the first set of numbers.

So 9 Channel is still correct in the old way of doing things.

Yes, just saw his diagram and corrected my initial impression of his speakers. Not sure if I like the idea of Atmos since a subwoofer for each speaker would be too much. I already get complaints with my single 12" subwoofer in a midsized room.

So from what the two of you are saying is it can be a 9.2 and a 7.2.2 just depending on how the person looking at it thinks about it? or are the 3 powered subwoofers not counted as their own subwoofer channels? I figured they do count as they both require their own subwoofer pre out from the receiver and their own power source from the wall even if they are built into the towers/center channel.

I would say they do, but.... they also kinda take the role of the bass driver for your towers. So I wouldn't really call them dedicated subs either.

But yeah this can be a 9.2 setup or 7.2.2.

I would say 9.2 myself as they are more or less using the top speakers as front high vs downward firing from ceiling.

But again, gray area in terms of labeling.

Yeah, I dunno, I'm just getting triggered by the guy. He said it's okay if I am confused because he just delivered a knowledge "warhead to my forehead"...

Guy isn't even interested in buying them, he is just trying to make himself look smart and it's starting to bug me as I don't know if he is right or I am right or if we're both idiots.
