Seasonic - Non Conduction Pin #20

Hello,
Still haven't finished my 24 pin cable, taking it slow and hoping to get it right. I was also slowed down because I had to get my Dad's modding tools back to him for a build he is doing.
I have been getting my own tools and and am awaiting the last piece of equipment; a Thermaltake Dr. Power II which should be here on Wednesday!

I was labeling my wires to make it easier to wire the connectors up and found out something interesting, my Seasonic Snow Silent 750W PSU doesn't use pin 20, it splices the 24 pin's #2, #3 and #21 pin spaces, but #20 isn't used. And I can see on the factory cable that they don't even have a wire in that pin location.

I am sleeving cables, and I want my 24 Pin to PSU to run down the inside of my case, if I leave that wire off, it won't look right. Does anyone have a solution, can I just put the wire in there and not worry about it making continuity with the PSU and Mobo?

I was trying to figure this out, if I don't want it to have continuity, I could cut the #16 AWG wire take a 1 inch piece of the wire jacket and superglue it on the the two leaving a gap in the wires, then sleeving it so you can't tell there is a break.

Any help would be appreciated.

it comply with ATX standard 24pin connector

do what you want : leave empty, add only the sleeve, add a wire with a break at some point,...
just don't make it elecctrically continuos (respect the manufactur wish thumb.gif )

p.s. also ask your dad wink.gif

Get some 2mm heatshrink and a Top E Nylon guitar string and make an insulated, non-conducting wire out of it which you can crimp and sleeve to blend with the rest of the cable.

Awesome, I like the guitar string idea. I couldn't think of anything plastic that was non conductive, like plastic, shaped round and skinny enough, and you came up with a great solution!
That is why I leave my questions here! Thanks!thumb.gif

Ok, so threading the heat shrink onto the string is solved by running a finger dipped in watered down washing up liquid along the string.

Heating it up afterwards should be done flat to avoid stretching the string and ruining the 3mm at each end that you've left free for the crimp - and be careful not to put too much grip on the string when you crimp it - you really don't want to try stripping heat shrink off that string.

Also, when heating the heat shrink start from the middle and work towards the ends to avoid bubbles.

You can melt sleeve onto the crimp doing heat-shrinkless method but be very careful to melt in the blue part of the flame right at the end of the wire crimp (not anywhere between the wire crimp and the insulation crimp) - and only for a short count of 8 at the most.

Don't be too worried about the fragility while you're working on it, it all firms up when it cools down and has been sleeved and can be handled afterwards just about the same as any other wire.

Sounds like you've done this before!

So you recommend crimping the connector to the heat shrink, not the guitar string? I would guess that melting the sleeve to the guitar string would probably melt the nylon, right?

Will the guitar string be as flexible as the regular wires, and can it be trained to follow the other wires? I'm thinking it may be too stiff, but I'm using combs, so I think it'll be OK.

A "wire cut at some point" seems to me a more simply and cheap solution...

Since I've never thrown a string set away it's always been an obvious thing to do.

No, crimp the pin on the guitar string but cut the shrink to avoid having to strip it off the string since heat shrink doesn't strip as easily as ordinary insulation and you might nick the string and cause it to break. The crimp will go on the string very neatly as long as you don't apply too much force and crush it.

The nylon does have a certain resilience but if you stretch it (by hanging it up and running a heat gun down it) both the shrink and the string will stretch and the string will be weakened.

Apart from being a little more flexible and a few thou' thicker the result is about the same as a normal wire.

This may all sound rather complicated, but if you were to read an explanation of the cut-wire method that would probably seem complicated as well. How, for example , do you maintain uniformity where the wire is cut?

1-proper length : so the giunction won't be in a bend
2-isolate the end with tape
3-put the ends in a heatshrink, face to face

Don't tell me that you can see the additional thickness under the sleeve
post #10 of 13

Or you could slit the insulation lengthways and cut a section of wire out of it - making sure you got every filament, of course.
