i7 6700k OC Troubles Please Help *Updated 4/18/17* *Kinda Solved*

Hello, im here because i recently tried to research and oc on my own and i keep ending up running into a problem. Ive tried several OC settings (sorry i cant remember them all, but i do remember some). Ill start off with my build(most are new)

Intel Core i7-6700K 8M Skylake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz LGA 1151 (currently just using turbo to 4.2Ghz)
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (currently at stock 2133mhz)
ASUS Z170-A LGA 1151 Motherboard (Current Update 3401 Even tried on last update)
Nvidia GTX 960 FTW 4GB GFX
H100i v2 Corsair Liquid Cooler
Thermaltake 850w PSU
SAMSUNG 850 EVO 2.5" 500GB SATA III (Windows 10 Pro OS)
2TB Seagate HDD

** I would like to start off by saying i don't think i have a winning 6700k chip, i feel like it requires more voltage just to run OC numbers (compared to others ive seen online). Orignally i had it at 4.5Ghz with 1.35 (or) 1.365 Vcore (i cant remember which i left it on, but ive tried both). Ram was at 2800Mhz and 1.353 Dram Voltage (mobo kept adding a .003 to then end). I couldnt get my computer to successfully run on 3200Mhz, but everything was okay at 2800Mhz. ONLY thing that i had a problem with is, my headset might would idle out ONLY WHEN I did the OC. This is a brand new headset and my previous headset was having issues too(now im thinking it wasn't the headsets fault), Reason i know it isn't the headset is because i purchase 2 Hyper X Cloud II headsets and both did the same thing when plugged into my pc only, But when i went into BIOS and changed everything to defaults, everything works properly on both headsets. When the headset goes out i have to press a button on the headset for it to turn the mic back on. So im assuming there is a power issue when OC that not enough power is going to my headset? I'm a big novice at OC in general and i need some guidance on this.

I have also tried

BCLK: Always had it at 100.0

VSSIO : 1.15v , 1.2v , 1.25v & Auto
VSSA: 1.15v , 1.2v ,1.25v & Auto

LLC : levels 1-5 & auto

SVID: Disabled (asus UEFI says disable if overclocking) But also tried it on Auto which enables it

Core cach min/max: Auto, and 44

Also read somewhere about people having to put PCH to 1.1 so i tried that didnt help

FLCK : Auto, and 1Ghz

So im sure by now your wanting to know stress test results and i dont have it all written down but at first i didnt know i wasnt supposed to use prime95 after 26.6 version and my temps were slightly over 80 celcius, which i didnt like. so i researched and found a link to the 26.6 version which ran alot better for my Skylake. Only thing is after doing those stress test, i recently tried using 3200Mhz on my ram OC and it wouldnt even boot to bios, i would have to restart computer for it to boot atleast to bios, so im not sure if running the wrong prime version messed with anthing. I ran a memtest and everything came back okay.

SO with all the tests i did, i never found a stable OC that would last a stress test. I wish i wrote all the different setups i tried and which BSOD codes came with which to give you a better evaluation on what is going on, but ill try to keep it written down from now on. SO if anyone is willing to help a new Overclocker like me, it would be greatly appreciated. thumb.gif

Was irritated with usb devices not working so i started at default again, this time all i did was mess with cpu ratio and voltage set manually instead of adaptive, everything else auto(i know llc on auto doesnt sound that great) also no XMP enabled so its running at stock 2133Mhz

i believe i have it set at 1.33 Vcore and 4.5Ghz Overclocked.
started at 1.28 and increasey by .005 Vcore until i could run all becnh/stress tests without BSOD, and no USB devices have been failing (even under load)

Used HWINFO, CPU-Z, XTU, Prime95 26.6v (FOR SKYLAKE DONT USE PAST THIS Prime95 VERSION)

after boot idle temps were 21-26 C (after i took some can aired to the rig and also got rid of dust around desk and components)

Stress Test Prime95 Temps(these were the highest peak temps, sometimes temps would go down to 56-63 during test)

XTU Benchmark

CPU-Z Benchmark

So i would like to still overclock my ram and see if problems occur or just leave it on stock and say F*** It. ? skull.gif .. Not Sure Yet

Also xmp mode 1? i think there is only one option for xmp that i have? unless you are just telling me to turn on xmp?

So everything is stable, BUT no RAM OC
Special Thanks to Stephenn82, and anyone else who tried to help in anyway

**Feel Free to give ideas on my RAM OC/USB situation(View Above for details on the original USB issue with the headset, and below shows after trying different configs both my camera and headset wasnt working properly)

Camera stutters when i play a game like if my cpu usage was at 100% and couldnt handle it but my usage isnt anywhere near 100%. Havent tested it but im sure my headset will mess up on occasion too like before. I looked online and i started to try different settings and before i got my camera to not stutter, but my mic would go out randomly like if the power decided to randomly stop powering my mic. As stated in OG post i know for sure its not the headset and that it has something to do with when i overclock, because when i put things to default, there isnt any issues

Hi there!

I see that you have a decent little set up there, and having some troubles. Lets try these on for size:

BCLK: Always had it at 100.0 Leave at 100
VSSIO : 1.15v , 1.2v , 1.25v & Auto Auto is fine
VSSA: 1.15v , 1.2v ,1.25v & Auto Again, Auto
LLC : levels 1-5 & auto Try putting this at 5
SVID: Disabled (asus UEFI says disable if overclocking) But also tried it on Auto which enables it Leave it to auto or enabled
Core cach min/max: Auto, and 44 Leave to auto for now. we will move that up later

Also read somewhere about people having to put PCH to 1.1 so i tried that didnt help Just leave to Auto

FLCK : Auto, and 1Ghz Auto is good.

Try clicking the Overclock method in bios to XMP. Dont click the box to enable intel based stuff when the profile box pops up. Your ram will run 3200 out of the box. If you are setting it all to manaul, dont just yet.

All of these options are found in your Ai Tweaker tab. I can run my 6700k at 4.6ghz at 1.28v. 4.4ghz ran perfect at 1.264v in offset mode, I set to - and Auto. I was running -.015 offset, but had some issues.

A lot can be found here in Der8auers video.

Oh yeah, one last alibi...with a 100i you are getting SUPER high temps...what thermal compound are you using? Did you get enough on there? Is the CPU block seated all the way? I had my rig at 4.8ghz for SnG's and 1.38v and barely broke 70c on my h115i. Check all of that out. Dont crank down the fasteners too tight, but snug them up if a little loose. I recommed Gelid GC Extreme thermal compound if you have the extra 14 bucks. Really good stuff. It worked wonders on my R9 390 too!

First off, Thank you for your reply biggrin.gif Secondly i will try all these settings and post results later this evening, but which Core ratio should i try? 4.6Ghz at 1.28v?

Also those temps were only shown when i used the wrong version of prime95 once i downloaded 26.6 version i got temps 54-67 Celcius when i was stress testing 4.5Ghz at 1.35v. Currently im on turbo settings (Asus Optimized) and i dont trust their settings to run a stress test with it, with everything on default settings it shows my vcore at 1.408v atm and i dont like that lol (i heard anything 1.4v+ is bad for the 6700k?) BUT to answer your question i used the pre-applied Thermal compound on the h100i and my normal load of Streaming software bots and running a game at 4.5ghz 1.35v temps usually would be around 50-60 celcius. However if you think i should still check and reapply thermal compound i shall, i currently only have some artic silver on hand. Ill watch those videos here shortly also.

Side note ill try to use XMP but i noticed after i used the wrong version of Prime95 that for some reason my xmp 3200mhz doesnt wanna boot (not even to bios splash screen) BUT i shall try again for you.

Will be back later with results thumb.gif

Edit: confirmed 3200Mhz will not boot anymore, i can confirm that it used to before i started to do prime95 test (on the wrong version) so i really hope i didn't mess up my ram :/. Not even bios splash screen, and my monitor acts like there is no input signal comimg through. I didnt try upping Vcore yet (out running errands) incase the cpu needs additional voltage just to post

EDIT 2: So 3200Mhz dosn't work, but when i set it to 2800Mhz it boots, but just opening google chrome for 5min it BSOD (unfortunatley, my brother was the one on it filling out a application so i do not know the code it threw)

Gonna do more testing. Side note i really hope my ram sticks are ok still

Edit 3: test results after using same config as video you gave me which was 4.5ghz 1.26v xmp 3200Mhz 255.50 limit max and min max was 41. Dram voltage 1.3530 (my mobo adds .003 for some reason)

1.26v wouldnt boot xmp 3200Mhz
1.27v 3200Mhz booted bsod after login
1.28v 3200Mhz booted bsod service file exception ntfs.sys
1.29v 3200Mhz booted bsod system service exception win32base.sys
1.3v booted bsod before login kmode_exception_not_handled

1.26v 3000Mhz booted bsod before login Driver IRQL less or equal

1.27v 3000Mhz Same as 1.26v
1.28v 3000Mhz Booted bsod before login kmode exception not handled
1.29v 3000Mhz booted logged in BSOD IRQL less or equal
1.3v 3000Mhz booted logged in. Ran prime95 just as video instructed and BSOD after 10sec Kernal security check failure

1.26v 2933Mhz booted bsod on login screen service exception
1.27v 2933Mhz booted bsod before login irql not less or equal than
1.28v 2933Mhz booted logged in then bsod 10sec later irql not less than or equal
1.29v 2933Mhz booted logged in waited 30sec then bsod kmode exception not handled
1.3v 2933Mhz booted bsod while logging in driver irql not less than or equal

1.26v 2800Mhz booted thought it froze then it bsod Whea (didnt catch the rest)
1.27v 2800Mhz booted then bsod on login driver irql
1.28v 2800Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Went to stress test then it crashed before i opened it bsod irql less than or equal
1.29v 2800Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Ran stress test. BSOD Cache manager.
1.3v 2800Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Ran stress test. Win32base.sys system service exception

SO im under the assumption that if i want high ram OC i would prob need more Vcore? Although more Vcore = less cpu life overtime? So should i increase Vcore? Or downclock Ram some more?

More testing at 2800Mhz

1.31v 2800Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Ran stress test. Prime95 crashed. Ran test again. Pass 2 error bsod clock watchdog timeout
1.32v 2800Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Ran stress test pass 3 had a error but idk how to find out what the error is, then bsod kmode exceptio
1.33v 2800Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Ran stress test no bsod. Temps seem closer to the lower 80s high 70s but still seems high.
1.34v 2800Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Ran stress test. No bsod. But max temp was 84
1.35v 2800Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Ran stress test. 1min so far no BSOD but temps got too high for my liking around 80's max 87.

I hope that when i ran stress test on last prime version that it didn't mess up my thermal compound from getting so hot?

Changed ram to auto so its prob stock clock 2133Mhz no xmp

1.26v 2133Mhz booted bsod before login (didnt see code sorry)
1.27v 2133Mhz booted bsod before login kmode
1.28v 2133Mhz booted bsod bad pool header on login screen.
1.29v 2133Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Ran stress test, immediate bsod kmode exception
1.3v 2133Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Clock watchdog timeout.
1.31v 2133Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Ran stress test. Low temps but error stopped it. Bsod clock watchdog timeout
1.32v 2133Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Ran stress test. Low temps bit bsod Bad_pool_caller
1.33v 2133Mhz booted logged in. Waited 30sec. Ran stress test. Max temp was 77 but bsod system service exception

Didnt feel like increasing voltage on this set of test until i got some feedback

Secondly i will try all these settings and post results later this evening, but which Core ratio should i try? 4.6Ghz at 1.28v? Do you mean core ratio, or cache? these are two different controllable clocks. Leave cache alone. Core ratio is ok at what you have set to.

Side note ill try to use XMP but i noticed after i used the wrong version of Prime95 that for some reason my xmp 3200mhz doesnt wanna boot (not even to bios splash screen) BUT i shall try again for you Do me and you a favor, reset your BIOS to default settings. I know, it sucks...but its the best way to go from there. Then try the XMP profile..but DONT click the ok.

Dram voltage 1.3530 (my mobo adds .003 for some reason) Dont set Min and Max at 41, it keeps your CPU ramped up the whole time, doesnt down clock at idle. Good for testing stability for now, but not good to leave on all the time.

was asking what to start with ex: 4.5Ghz 1.26v ratio and core voltage

currently back on default settings and it is using turbo boost at 4.2ghz

EDIT: its actually at stock 4ghz https://gyazo.com/65a02351ee751b43e8ebcd86a5c2e82f

I forgot to mention that the Asus Enhanced mode, even set to enabled, DOESNT work if you are overclocking. Just leave at Auto and if you go over 42 and set Sync all cores manually, it is disabled.

If you want 4.5ghz, try 1.285v with negative offset of .005. Try that out. Dont manually set your ramp, set to XMP, dont click the OK, but the 3200mhz will apply. What ram set do you have by chance? Oh, check out rig builder up top of page. Fill that in with all your specs, and we can easily see it in your signature in the future.

this is a general video that I can find. Not a lot of people use the Z170A board too much and try to squish the most performance out of it AND share it on youtube.

https://youtu.be/ldcz9xzWa58?t=185

First setting under Ai Tweaker is Asus overclock mode, click XMP, dont enable the profile, it messes with the core voltages etc. Just set to XMP, then dont click ok.

Do you have adaptive/offset mode for CPU voltage? or is it just manual?

Under the CPU controls set CPU Core ratio to 45.

DRAM freq should show 3200 there. If not, let AUTO run as it should take the XMP profile you applied.

CPU core/cache voltage, set to Adaptive it wil show whatever the default is, its ok, leave that.
The Additional turbo boost voltage, put your max voltage in, the 1.285. Offset, set to Negative, .005

DRAM voltage is Auto, should set itself to 1.35 after the next reboot.

APply settings, reboot, go back in and check it all out. Then proceed to stability test.

Good luck, have fun!
