Can Z270 Run 3 graphics cards

I have 2x 1080 ti that I would like to use in SLI.
But I also have some spare graphics cards. I have read a few things that show using a separate card for physx/physics may improve performance.

I was wondering if it would be worth adding a 3rd gpu for physx in the 4x slot.

I realize z270 pci lane limits me to 1x16 gpu, or 2x8 gpu.

But if I add a 3rd card would that be 2x8 + 1x4?
Or 3x4?

I want to get a x99 board so I have more pci lanes, but I'm waiting for the new version of x99 since it's pretty old.

What do you guys think? It's a bit of a stretch, but I happen to have the graphics cards already.

I appreciate it, the forum has been a big help.

No, don't. SLI is shoddy enough

I think Nvidia doesn't allow graphics cards to run at 4x. However you can always try.

Besides. What game you play has physX?

Check your motherboard manual to answere your highlighted part (Or download the manual online) Most likely scenario is 2x8 and no support for a third graphics card.

Oh I didn't know about the gpu not working on 4x. And I have no idea what games I'd play that use 'physx'. I guess I assumed physx covered physics computations in games. I guess you are saying physx is different?

I'm not that educated on it. Thanks for the new info.

When it comes to Intellectual Property companies will patent things to death. The origin story of "PhysX" is quite sad. Some company started making dedicated phisics cards (So you would have a CPU, GPU and a phisics card) but Nvidia took them over and didn't want the competition to reap the fruits of their 'investment'.

A google search gave me this wikipedia list of PhysX games.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_with_hardware-accelerated_PhysX_support

Edit: Blue bars are for seperate physics card support

Yea I just looked at that games list. Pretty limited. I guess there are a few recent popular games on there, but I get your point. It's a little depressing tbh.

I'm reading about SLI having less and less support, and this as well. I like working on my pc, adding and upgrading things. The extra pci slots seem almost useless. Bummer
