Gigabyte HD 5850 1GB OC

Thread Starter
I bought this card thinking it was reference but it has a aftermarket cooler.
My issue is that I can't OC it because the voltages are locked completely.
Any attempt causes the screen the flicker and flash at random, and only in random areas, not the whole screen.
I wanted to know if I could flash the bios to unlock the voltages, or am I screwed on this card?
You can't OC at all? Not even just a few MHz? My guess is that It's probably the drivers, possibly a bad install or just buggy. 15.7.1 seems to work good on my 5850 so it may be worth giving it a try.
Just make sure to clean all the old driver files with DDU: http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

I'm using the lastest legacy driver, the 15.
Any increase makes it trip.
Hmm, that is very odd. You should be able to get higher than that on stock volts.

Maybe try bumping the clocks with this utility and see what happens; https://www.techpowerup.com/download/amd-gpu-clock-tool/

BTW, what you have is a 5830 not 5850.

And regarding the voltage, you will not be able to change it by modifying the bios, the voltage is hardware regulated so it would require physical modifications to change the voltage.

Wait, wut? I bought a 5850 though. I can't really check since it's always saying 5800 series, but maybe that's why I can't find and exact image of it..
It looks different.

Does anyone know how to bios mod the HD 5000 series Core Voltage?

I tested HD 5870 AMD ATI BIOS on HD 5850 1GB AMD ATI & It worked & reported 1.175v, versus 1.088v. However **** The HD 5870 BIOS wouldn't post BIOS, but would post video once Windows loaded*****

I want to clock it to 1Ghz but needs more core voltage.

1Ghz means 32 Billion Pixel's every Second & 72 Billion Texel's ever second... So we would gain like... 5 GIGA PIXELs & 12 GIGA TEXELs/ So maybe a 10 fps increase, which would help a lot!

32 : 72 = 844 (my max core at 1.088v) X 32 = 27 GIGA PIXELS & 844 X 72 = 60.768 GIGA TEXELS

I can clock my HD 5850 to 844Mhz core @ 1.088v... You should as well... Flash the BIOS ... here's a BIOS Modding Tool & Stuff

**** Oh yeah Install the 16.2.1 INF from Device Manager to gain some frame rate ****

Use AMD Radeon Pro Tools to mess with the driver jazz + more features

RBE_128.zip 601k .zip file
atiflash_277.zip 1189k .zip file

1.175v vCore versus stock HD 5850 @ 1.088v vCore (850Mhz, might pull 900-950Mhz)
NOTE : It won't post BIOS, but will boot to windows and report VIDEO once in WINDOWS... That's why I'm trying to mod the ORIGINAL BIOS...
ATI.HD5870.1024.091112.zip 48k .zip file

Thanks

@mynm

May we ask for your assistance, buddy? biggrin.gif

I just want to mod the HD 5850 BIOS, since the 5870 BIOS didn't help with any extra cores or anything and even Hwinfo saw it as a HD 5850, and not a 5870...

hd5850 1gb original bios 1.088v

This is untrue, I flash hd 5870 bios to hd 5850 & it went up from 1.088v to 1.175v, so it's possible to increase the voltage via the BIOS... Need @mynm to assist.
