Apparently the Ryzen 5 1500X has been overclocked to 4.2GHz at 1.432V and 4.3GHz at 1.424V

I'm guessing those are just validation stable?

Planning on moving to a 1600x configuration, but think I may wait for RAM prices to drop first.

I think this is the one major achillies heel for Ryzen. The fact that so much of the chips' performance is tied to what kind of memory you install and whether or not your MB will even support it. Then you have to shell out the additional cash on higher speed / CL ram which are selling at an insane premium right now.

Ryzen is a good budget platform for people who are using programs / games that can utilize the additional cores. It'll be interesting with Kaby+ and Coffeelake if the potential core increase affects the core clock by a significant amount.

This testing of CPUs purely on how they perform in a couple of crap games is getting annoying, games are not good at all for testing CPU performance. But it apparently is what many care about, games games games. You will probably get more FPS by making a custom graphics preset instead of using the ultra nonsense predefined by devs while it will look the same.

What type of testing would you suggest? There's already a ton of other synthetic tests that are already done.

I'm all for new testing methods ☺

well you dont have to buy the expensive low CAS kits, CL is not particularly important to the fabric speed which is where the extra performance comes from.
My 3200 G.skill 16GB kit was $108.
getting most non-samsung b-die kits to run rated speeds is problematic now, but in a few weeks the official patch for board ram compatibility will be released.

I'm in the same dilemma boat 1600X vs 7700K. Choosing a new CPU is now harder than ever, thank you AMD smile.gif Finally some competition.
