eGPU, Thinkpad T530i and disable TDP lock!

Hello there!

I came back to you great OCN community to help me out on one thing i get really stuck on! Since i'm usually a big lurker but lately do not post much! smile.gif

Here you can find all my previous thread about the XPS 15 L502X and The Thinkpad T530i implementations with the eGPU. Here

So i begin, specs:
-T530i QM77
-i7 2670QM
-8GB 1600mhz
-120Gb SSD
-FHD panel
-Lenovo genuine 65Watt power brick + modded 130Watt Dell one.
-EXP GDC v8.4d + R9 270 + 12v/14A power supply.

What i have done:
-Flashed the stock bios to the latest
-Flashed the ME to the latest
-Tried to update the microcode
-Modded the ME to allow BCLK OC, modded the flash descriptor
-Repasted to get decent T°, no problem with the CPU under 80° full load

=> My issue, i would really need some help plz, i'm really bad software side: i can't get the full CPU performances due to the TDP turbo lock, if i lunch mafiaIII my cpu-z multi drop about 1000pts, from 4600pts to 3800pts. I had to disable the cpu management in the bios to get rid of the issue, but i'm stuck without turbo to 2.7ghz after oc, x25/x26 multi only. The t° are good, under mafiaIII i got from 70°/80° for the lowest core to the highest.

So could you help me to sort out these couple of questions:

1/Why lenovo/ibm bios are so hard to mod, i read you need a programmer to flash them, but why, i found nowhere the explanation why you would use a programmer to flash back the bios?! Bios is flash blocked if you mod it? The EC is the problem? The ME flash descriptor?

2/I tried to unlock the TDP using the NVRAM EFI shell but without success, the value for the turbo should be enable x01, but got x00 when i read the variable. Did i miss something about the NVRAM modding and IFR.txt files?

3/Throttlestop do not work either to maintain the cpu turbo without downclocking it. There is another way to do it, i mean with R&W Everything or with some others tools to force the cpu to ignore the turbo TDP lock.

4/I would also go on the PCB if needed, dunno if there is a pin on the IC that control the power management, or try to fake the cpu is consuming less, dunno, i have checked but it goes a bit far from my knowledge.

I thanks you in advance for your time, plz share some help, on the other forum i was alone on the thread! sad-smiley-002.giffrown.gif

Thx smile.gif

Just spitballing here, I know Throttlestop didn't work for you... have you tried Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility?

I use it to lock my X1 Carbon to 15W max and never turbo up to the 25W just to save a bit of battery here and there. It gives me the option to increase way past 25W, I just have no need for that in my current setup.

Though XTU doesn't seem to want to apply my custom voltages unless I run XTU and hit apply... which is annoying.

May have to give ThrottleStop another look for the voltages...

I use XTU to mod the BCLK, but the turbo options are greyed! Normal into to bios the TDP lock is active, in your case if you can either mod the BCLK and turbo TDP, it mean either the ME and the bios are free from the locks.

My whole problem is now, how to get rid of the TDP lock, i can't stand with these perfs, especially because i can't stand in front a cpu that didn't deliver it's true perfs! biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

Possibly without a programmer!

I was able to make a i5 7300U ES on a Mini PC I'm reviewing pull 40W from the wall. It's a 15W CPU.

Try XTU, it helps removing limits in amperage, you might have more options than I do with my U model Kaby CPU. It was able to keep the Turbo 3.5 GHz on all thread during the whole benchmark, but reached 100C before thermal throttling.

I shall try newer version of XTU, it is true i forgot to mention i'm using an old rev of it, the 3.1.x. I know i'm pretty stuck with my loved SB cpu's, so far the most affordable and great performer.

The last time i tried the lastest rev of XTU or the ones for the SB/YB, it didn't worked, i mean the BCLK was greyed anyway, but the TDP control was on.

This with my previous XPS, who had no problem of throttling, since i had a modded bios and so unlocked TDP on XTU 3.1.x!

I will give it a try and report back, i'm looking for the repository thread on HWBOT forum. Thx! smile.gif

Just tried a newer version, it worked better since it is a newer chipset, QM77 board instead of the XPS L502X HM67. smile.gif

So i got the BCLK unlocked as it should now, but all the power management options greyed again!

So until i unlock the bios or overcome it, i'm stuck. And since the only info i found on bios mod was threads where people give a bios, the guy mod without explanations, finally the whole stuff is flashed under an external programmer.

Cmon lenovo/ibm! rolleyes.gif

I'm not certain about the T530 series, but I think the Thinkpad Forum.de folks did do a mod bios for the T420 which unlocked the TDP capability. You could search on there and see if they have anything on the T530i. Note that it is in German though.

Not sure if it was Oleh that did the mod originally.

So i checked and found the thread about the T420 bios mod by the banned Oleh. Unfortunately again not much is explained.
On top of that the T420 is base on the QM67 chipset, supporting the SB, like my old XPS HM67. The T530 goes along the QM77 chipset so i'm not sure i could use this bios.

On the other hand i'm also not sure i could use a W530 bios, as far i got it, both should be based on the same logic board with an YB.

Thx for the info anyway! smile.gif

I'm just a bit scared about bios mods/flash, again not because it is hard, but simply because i'm using the laptop atm, so i can't afford to transform it completely in a bench rig as it should! It already took me a lot of time to unmount/remount everything several times to mod where i could. biggrin.gif

Well, i checked on the Bios-Mods site but the modded bios can't be downloaded. I found nowhere other solid information about lenovo bios mod. But from what i understood, IBM encrypt the bios data, these are decrypted when the bios is flashed, so that's why you need an external programmer along the modded bios.

I think the T530 share the same hardware that the W530, so if someone have a modded bios and want to share just pm me.

The last solution is to go directly mess with the EC chip on the pcb ,to remove the TDP limit. If someone know how to, the schematics can be found.

I give up for now, will see if can buy a decent programmer for general flashing purposes. biggrin.gif

No matter what, you'll have to use an external programmer for any real Thinkpad BIOS modding. It's what prevented me from doing anything with my T420.

I wish I could be of more hope, but I'm only aware of the stuff I'm parroting about the modding from the Bios Mods website, and that .de website. Never really been my forte. You'd have much more luck with a TDP unlock requests on the Bios Mods website for sure.
