I have a question in regards to Molex connections...

Thread Starter
Why on earth do those stupid things still exist? I understand it is for legacy but why do modern companies making new products use old crap? Why not use a SATA connection?

Thoughts, opinions and speculation welcomed.

I really don't know, I thought it was because of electrical compatibility, then I remembered you can get molex to sata adapters, which I would need if I ever put more than 6 hdd in my testing NAS...

Molex should be killed. Then burned. Then shredded.

[edit] Oh Lord Xeb, why hate thy molex? Is it so for it crapped less than lucky hard drives ?

Molex should burn in the deepest pits of hell for all eternity!
They are a left over from the computer dark ages and they should be replace with SATA

Have an old fan controller that needs molex and i refuse to use an entire cable with multiple molex connectors just because of one device
Bought a molex to SATA power adaptor which by the way is not the most easy thing to find.

Molex have no reason for use besides cost effectiveness anymore. SATA is much more convenient for data and low power draw things like HDDs and fans, and PCIE can be used for the high power draw stuff like GPUs.

Kills me when a modern non-modular PSU wastes space by dedicating 2-4 super long cables with 3-4 Molex each on them like we are ever going to use ~10+ molex devices on a modern rig. At least on a modular we can just leave them empty at the PSU.

I just did a search on Fleabay for "SATA to Molex adapters" and got several pages of hits for both cable type adapters and one piece adapters. Newegg also carries them (one of the hits on Fleabay was for Newegg) and I'm sure Amazon also does.

I make my own PSU cables so it doesn't really matter to me if a device uses Molex or SATA power; if anything, Molex connectors require one less pin to crimp

The only time a device with a Molex power connector annoys me is when the pins are too blunt on the end, making it hard to plug into. The otherwise excellent HooToo (seriously, that is the brand name) internal card reader in my current desktop machine had blunt pins. Adding insult to injury was the space I had to work in to plug into the card reader was pretty tight. Even with the card reader left unfastened so I could slide it out a bit to get more room for my hand, it took me over an hour of fiddling and fooling around, bluing up the air, and losing a significant amount of skin from my hand before I could get that misbegotten plug plugged in because the male pins in the HooToo didn't have enough taper on the end to guide the female pins on the plug over the ends of the male pins and the side of at least one of the female pins kept butting against the blunt end of the corresponding male pin. I would love to "meet" the moron who designed that! Needless to say, I'm making sure the new case I've been building will have plenty of room for my hands.

A lot of D5 and DDC pumps still use Molex connectors instead of Sata. It's almost always a pain to plug in. There's always one dang pin that is offset preventing it to plug properly. Every. Single. Time. ARGH.

I don't get it. Sata is much easier to plugin and it's pretty much impossible to plugin upside down. I have plugged in molex upside down a few times with normal force. If someone really needs molex they can get an adapter for that one odd device.

I don't even get why we have CPU and PCIe as separate connectors. They use the same voltage, why didn't they just use the ATX/EPS 4 and 8 pin? It would cut down on cable clutter since most GPUs wouldn't need more than a single 8 pin, and they wouldn't need yet another connector. A single 4 pin can handle 192W yet a 8 pin PCIe can only handle 150w. Makes no sense to me.
