OLED 4K 30" 60 Hz - Dell UP3017Q - Page 51

You can't have two thirds of your frames black (i.e. Color, Black, Black, Color, Black, Black...), because two black frames in a row is just one longer black frame. If you're thinking of 1 color frame followed by a black period that's twice as long as the color frame was shown for, that's called 60 Hz with a 33% duty cycle.

120 Hz means 120 image frames are being shown on the screen. If it only takes 60 Hz input, that means it shows each frame twice, so 120 image frames, and 120 black frames. (Frame 1, Black, Frame 1, Black, Frame 2, Black, Frame 2, Black, etc.)

Strobing reduces the overall light output of the display, but it doesn't affect color any more than turning down the brightness would (in fact brightness control on most lower end monitors is accomplished by doing exactly that, strobing the backlight with a lower duty cycle for lower brightness).

Gotcha, thanks for the explanation. I found it to be unbearable, the doubling effect was far worse than typical sample and hold blur spear IMHO. Had they given the option to disable strobing I would have considered keeping it, and had they had a MST 120hz option I would have been in 7th heaven

Is the fan hybrid or does it run even on a 100% black screen? is it consistent or change in pitch? I can't imagine having 3 of those if it spins up/down.

Scaling is 100% and the monitor is set to 1:1.

The fan turns off when the screen goes into power saving mode but otherwise is usually on.

My primary monitor has thus far been a 65" LG G6 OLED that I've used since mid/late March of last year. I got it as part of the very first release when stock was only provided to a handful of retailers.

I have not noticed any major uniformity issues with the Dell. There do appear to be two bands that are slightly more red near the sides. Uniformity seems better with the compensation turned off, but I am not sure that holds true if the brightness is adjusted to be equal in both cases. Overall, uniformity seems on par with my G6, which I should caveat by saying I was lucky enough to get one without any significant white or near black uniformity issues. Two previous EF9500s I owned had some catastrophic uniformity problems to the point they were unusable.

I can notice the fan as a high pitch whining sound. It took a while to figure out that the monitor was producing the sound, and I had to read this forum to determine it was a fan.

My significant complaint about the Dell is that I can notice the pixel structure of the display and color fringing at the edges of text. It's mostly noticeable on white backgrounds, but other solid colors have a similar effect. The pixel structure almost looks diamond shaped, but I'm not willing to state that with certainty. It does bear a striking resemblance to quite a few displays I've seen in Samsung mobile devices. Do note that I'm sitting roughly 1 to 2 feet away most of the time.

Has anyone else noticed this about the pixel structure?

You may want to adjust your clear type text, that could be an issue. Remember, this OLED is a true RGB stripe.

Thought this was interesting from a dell rep on the dell forum:
Quote:
The monitor offers a 120Hz refresh rate, which is available via DisplayPort over USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C.

I do have a USB-C port on my Asus Rampage V10 edition but evidently it doesn't support the correct alternate mode as I can't seem to get video out of it. Anyone have a USB C laptop that supports display port alternate mode via usb c? I realize it probably doesn't work but I'd sure like to know for sure.

Huh... If that's the case, has anyone tried patching their GPU drivers and setting a custom refresh rate via CRU? Maybe it'll work over normal displayport on some GPUs.

Wow... did it work?? Obviously DP 1.2 doesn't have the bandwidth for 4k @ 120hz so I tried 1080p @ 120hz... Err... Let me test in a game.

If the game testing goes well, use this test to see if it drops any frames at 120 Hz.

DVI technically doesn't have the bandwidth for 1440p 110hz, but that doesn't stop me from using it tongue.gif

You should try running it past the DisplayPort spec anyway. GPU drivers have an arbitrary limit built in, but if you patch it out with the AMD/Nvidia pixel clock patcher, it might go as high as your GPU's hardware (and the display) will let it.

Pixel skipping confirmed... that's a shame. We really need someone with the right USB-C port to test this.

I won't believe 120 Hz 4K until I see it. When I tested the Dell with my TB3 laptop, 61 Hz and above frame skipped. So I stopped there. But come to find out, my XPS15 Laptop only has a 20 GBps TB3 port.

Does anyone have a full 40 GBps TB3 port laptop to test the Dell OLED 120 Hz?

I don't think any CPU/MB combinations that have a TB3 port run at 40 GBps.
