OLED 4K 30" 60 Hz - Dell UP3017Q - Page 55

this monitor has been out for few weeks...I doubt it's financially viable to have 2 suppliers not to mention this size is considered bleeding edge for OLED.

People have varying sensitivity in visual acuity...some who are used to 144Hz+ cannot go back to a 60Hz. Some who have used OLED/plasma cannot go back to LCD.

I guess it could also be inconsistency across the model in terms of uniformity and defects given the bleeding edge nature.

The general consensus seems like people don't feel this is worth the price tag...obvious early adopter premium is at work. Thread went quiet over the past week so I'm assuming most have either returned it, or found a decently happy medium to work with.

but we have a sample of what, 6 owners?

You are probably right about people having different expectations and sensitivities. I got mine today, I am pretty happy with it.

lol those pics are making my brain go haywire
we need magnified photos...or at least with a camera with a proper sensor.

OK just unboxed mine, first impression. wow nice packaging. wow cheap build quality. Does your lower bezel flexes and creaks? Rev 00 Oct 16 built in good old China (Foxconn?)

there appears only 4 screws, and it's housed in Al? Mg? finishing so looks like I wont try to crack this open any time soon without a tutorial/how-to video so I dont risk breaking any outer panels.

4K 120Hz no go, even via TB3 with a USB-C cable under 18" (which is a ridiculous requirement as is....1.65' is really tight) rendered by Intel HD 515

Still, it was cool to see it being able to charge a laptop and send video signals with just one wire.

haven't gamed on it yet

Vimeo 4K with movie mode, beauty

my 42 Megapixels photos: wow the amount of details that I didn't see before. (this has nothing to do with OLED or panel quality...I'm just shocked because I never had a full-sized 4K display).

I think i counted 2 dead pixels. Will have to look carefully. Best way is to pull up a full white screen or is there a different process for OLED?

Fan noise, I can see why this can bother others...I have sensitive ears and it's definitely louder than I'd hope.

So my first night impression: is it worth $3K, nah. Does it blow every other monitor out of the market. I'm thinking yes..I'm still tempted to try the 8K though.

May be because I was just on default settings most of the time and without calibration on my end but I can(prematurely?) and honestly say IGZO isn't THAT much inferior.

noob question:

1. is there a difference for the panel when it is a full-screen, perfect black image vs blank screen (ie blank screen saver) vs standby/off? Obviously the fan is off in the last scenario, but are the panels in the exact same state in all 3 scenarios (ie no burn-in concerns?)

2. my aging cards have DP 1.2 which supports MST. If i want 4K60 any mini-DP adapter will work? Are all mini-DP adapters backwards compatible and will work with DP1.4? Will need it to work when I get new cards later this year.

Ya, I never expected 4K/120 to work.

Play some dark content and you will quickly realize how inferior iPS/IGZO is to OLED. wink.gif

As long as the black is perfect black on the background or screen saver, no image retention possibilities. The pixels will have zero voltage applied. Although the electronics will still be on. Are you thinking about keeping the monitor on all the time or something?

Ya, any mini-DP adapter should work. There is no such thing as specific DP "version" cables, they are physically identical.

I'm thinking of keep it on with only a black wallpaper as a second monitor and drag windows over when I need the real estate.

OK my stand is pissing me off, it does not hold the weight of the monitor, keeps sliding down to the almost the lowest position (i wanted it at the tallest point. Anyone else have that problem? I'm sure I will RMA or just put a little wedge in.

I'm suspecting this is PenTile. Maybe it explains the text sharpness issues some people are having

True. One example is the Metro games which I tried playing 2 years ago. I won't install them again until I own an OLED display.

If it truly is pentile, then you may have better luck by setting your OS's text anti-aliasing to greyscale rather than RGB.

(this is also what is recommended for LG's OLED TVs since the fourth subpixel screws with RGB/BGR font anti-aliasing)
